SINGULAR lo = it la = it PLURAL los = them las = them As in English, direct objects may be replaced by direct object pronouns. In order to keep it simple, we are only going to refer to things, not people. Direct object pronouns for things are: SINGULAR lo = it la = it PLURAL los = them las = them

PLACEMENT: DOP’s in Spanish must go BEFORE the conjugated verb, NOT AFTER (like in English). Tú tocas la guitarra. (Dir. Obj.) You play the guitar. (Dir. Obj.) You play it. (DOP) Tú la tocas. (DOP)

However, “lo, la, los, las” also refers to direct objects who are people. Ana escucha música. Ana escucha a Beyonce. Ana listens to music. Ana listens to Beyonce. Ana la escucha. Ana la escucha. Ana listens to it. Ana listens to her. BOTH “música” and “Beyonce” are replaced by the direct object pronoun “la”.

The other direct object pronouns that refer to people are: me - me nos - us te - you os - you all lo - it (masc.); him la - it (fem.); her los - them (masc.) las - them (fem.)

Voy a invitarte a la fiesta. Te voy a invitar a la fiesta. The teacher helps me. La profesora me ayuda. I’m going to invite you to the party. Voy a invitarte a la fiesta. Te voy a invitar a la fiesta. She visits us everyday. Ella nos visita todos los días.
