EL PRETÉRITO IRREGULAR  Irregular preterite verbs have no accents Ir and Ser are the same in the preterite: Mi madre fue al supermercado. You tell which verb is being used by the context of the sentence. fuifuimos fuiste fuefueron Mi madre fue secretaria.

Hacer is also irregular in the preterite: Hice Hiciste Hizo Hicimos Hicieron Mi madre hizo un pastel ayer.

Dar and Ver are almost the same in the preterite: Mi madre vio la película ayer. didimos diste diodieron Mi madre me dio veinte dólares. vivimos viste viovieron

EL PRETÉRITO IRREGULAR  We group the other irregular verbs by the change in their stem. They do follow a pattern.  There are 3 types of stems: I, U, and J.  All the other irregular verbs have the same set of endings: eimos iste oieron Remember, there are NO ACCENTS on irregular preterit verbs!!

“I” -stem verbs hacer querer venir hic- vin- quis-  Note: QUERER changes meaning in the preterite. In the present it means “to want” but in the past it is translated to “tried” in the affirmative (+); “refused” in the negative (-).  Note: HACER in 3 rd person singular (él, ella, usted) hic- changes to hiz-. This prevents a “K” sound in the verb: hicohizo

“U”-stem verbs andar estar tener anduv- tuv- estuv- poder poner saber pud- pus- sup-  Note: SABER changes meaning in the preterite. It is translated to “found out.”  Note: PODER changes meaning in the preterite. It is translated to “managed.”

“J”-stem verbs decir traer -ducir dij- duj- traj-  Note: j-stem verbs drop the i from the 3 rd person plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes): dijeron conducir: condujecondujimos condujiste condujocondujeron

Re-cap There are no accents on irregular preterit verbs! All irregular verbs have the same endings! (e, iste, o, imos, ieron) Ir and ser are the same in the preterit! There are 3 types of stems in the irregular preterit: “I”, “U”, and “J”.
