Shut up! Escuchad y repetid Listen and repeat (to a group of people) Use the examples to think about how imperatives are formed for positive and negative commands to one person or groups of people. -Think also about how to make an imperative with a reflexive verb.

The imperative Positive and negative commands in the tú (+vosotros) and usted (+ustedes) forms

Tú – positive command This is formed by taking the 3rd person of the present tense of verbs e.g. Tomar - ¡Toma! Some important irregulars: Decir – di; Hacer – haz; ir – ve; oír – oye; poner – pon; salir – sal; tener – ten.

Tú – positive command Stem changing verbs stay the same: Pensar - piensa Dormir – duerme Reflexive verbs: These work in the same way, but the pronoun is attached to the end: Lavarse – lávate Ducharse – dúchate

Tú – negative command Use the present subjunctive: No tomes Stem changing: No pienses Reflexive – pronoun comes before the verb: No te duches No te laves

Vosotros – positive command Change the ‘r’ to a ‘d’ on the infinitive: Tomar - Tomad Pensar – Pensad Reflexive verbs: -add ‘os’ to the end, but drop the ‘d’: Levantarse - Levantaos Sentarse - sentaos

Vosotros – negative command Use the vosotros form of the present subjunctive: Tomar – No toméis Comer – no comáis Reflexive verbs – pronoun come before: Levantarse – no os levantéis

Usted(es) – positive commands Use the present subjunctive 3rd person for usted: Tomar - Tome Pensar – Piense vaya Or the present subjunctive 6th person for ustedes Tomar – tomen Pensar – piensen vayan

Usted – negative commands Use the present subjunctive 3rd person again for usted: No tome No piense No se duche Or 6th person for ustedes No tomen No piensen No se duchen
