S October 2013, Vol. 3 Ms. Rodriguez, School Counselor Respect We are learning about: Respect Respect means to think highly of or appreciate the importance of someone or something. When we respect someone we treat them kindly, use good manners and speak nicely. • Let your children know that you expect them to be respectful to their teacher, the other students and everyone they come in contact with. • When your children fail to show respect, have them think about other ways to handle the situation. • Model ways to show respect in different situations. Tips for promoting Respect: • Walk the talk: Your behavior sets the standard for what you expect of your child. Think about how you respond to the person who is holding up the line at the check out line. If you model impatience and anger, your child will replicate that behavior the next time someone is bothering them in the lunch line. • Show care for others: Do something kind for someone else, even someone you may not know. • Your children are watching your every move. This month the students are learning about respect. Respect seems to cover a lot of area: Respect for others, respect for property, respect for human differences and respect for the environment. You have been telling your children to be respectful to others, but do they really know what respect means? Respect means to think highly of or appreciate others. Respect means to agree to disagree without hurting the other person. Crippen Elementary is a Peacebuilders Site. Every morning during announcements, we pledge to give up “put-downs”. No one likes to feel embarrassed, threatened or insulted. “Put-downs” build mistrust in relationships. Practice giving up “put-downs” at home between siblings, from parent to child and vice versa. Implementing this practice at home will help your child appropriately handle a disagreement with a classmate at school. As always, let me know in what ways I can help you. Ms. Rodriguez Red Ribbon Week is October 28 through November 1. Talk to your child about how important it is to respect our body and make smart choices, like choosing to never start drugs. Tip of the month: Kids are never too young to show some respect! Children and adults deserve respect at every age. Here is a guideline based on age: Babies: They are too young to show respect but when you meet their needs, they learn to trust you. This helps as they get older because respect for authority is based on trust. Toddlers: They are old enough to learn to say “please” and “thank you”. Preschoolers: This is a good time to teach rules and consequences. Elementary age: They show the most respect for adults who make fair rules and stick to them. It helps to let them have a say in the rules that they are expected to follow. Middle & High School Children: Allow them to show independence, such as clothing or hairstyles, but make sure you have guidelines. They will appreciate the respect you are showing them. S Respeto Estamos aprendiendo sobre: Respeto Cuando respetamos a alguien somos amables con ellos, usamos buenos modales. • Dígale a sus hijos que usted espera que ellos enseñen respeto con sus maestras, sus compañeros de clase, y cualquier persona que les cruce su camino. • Cuando sus niños fallan en enseñar respeto, hable sobre otra manera de manejar la situación. • Modele diferentes maneras de ensenar respeto en diferentes situaciones. • Sus hijos observan su cada movimiento. Maneras de promover el respeto: • Sea el modelo: Su comportamiento establece el modelo de como quiere que su hijo/a actué. Piense en como reacciona usted con la persona que esta deteniendo la fila en el supermercado. Si usted modela impaciencia y frustración, si hijo/a va a replicar ese comportamiento la próxima vez que alguien este deteniendo la fila en la cafetería • Enseñe compasión por otros: Haga algo amable para otra persona, aunque usted no los conozca, como detenerles la puerta. Este mes los niños están aprendiendo sobre respeto. Respeto cubre muchas áreas en nuestras vidas. Respeto para otros, respeto de propiedad, respeto a las diferencias entre gente y respeto en nuestro ambiente. Siempre les decimos a nuestros niños que sean respetosos, pero realmente saben que significa el respeto? Respeto es apreciar a otros y pensar buenos pensamientos de ellos. Respeto significa poder tener un desacuerdo con otra persona sin hacerlos sentir mal al final. Crippen es una escuela “Peacebuilder”. Cada mañana durante los anuncios, promesemos que no nos burlaremos de nadie. A nadie le gusta ser avergonzado, insultado, o amenazado. Cuando nos burlamos de alguien, establecemos desconfianza en la relación. Practiquen dejar burlas en casa entre hermanos, de padre a hijo y de hijo a padre. Practicando esto en casa le ayudara a su hijo/a la próxima vez que tenga un desacuerdo con un amigo en la escuela. Como siempre, estoy aquí para servirle. Ms. Rodriguez La semana del listón rojo tomara acabo este 28 de octubre hasta el 1 de noviembre. Hable con sus hijos sobre la importancia de respetar nuestros cuerpos y hacer buenas decisiones, como nunca empezar drogas. Los niños nunca están muy jóvenes para enseñar un poco de respeto! Los niños y los adultos se merecen respeto a todas las edades. Algunas sugerencias para las diferentes edades: Bebes: Los bebes están muy jóvenes para enseñar respeto, pero cuando sus necesidades están cumplidas, se enseñan a confiar en otros. Esto ayuda cuando crezcan porque el respeto a la autoridad procede en confianza. Niños Pequeños: Tienen suficiente edad de aprender a decir “por favor” y “gracias”. Niños Preescolares: Este es un buen tiempo de implementar reglas y consecuencias. Niños de edad primaria: Ellos pueden ayudar en establecer las reglas y las consecuencias para si mismos. Ensenaran mas respeto a adultos que tienen reglas sensibles y que tiene consecuencias. Niños de la secundaria: Déjenlos tener un poquito de independencia en escoger ropa y peinados, pero este segura de establecer directrices. Ellos apreciaran el respeto que usted le esta ensenando.
