The Imperfect Progressive Apuntes #40

Present Participle (-ing) (-er/ir) iendo I. The Present Progressive-Repaso The present progressive is used when you want to emphasize that an action is happening right now. Formula: (-ar) ando Estar (conjugated) Present Participle (-ing) + (-er/ir) iendo Ejemplos: 1. Bailar 2. Correr Yo estoy bailando Yo estoy corriendo Tú estás bailando Tú estás corriendo él está bailando él está corriendo etc. etc.

II. The imperfect progressive The imperfect progressive is used to describe something that was taking place over a period of time in the past. The formula for the imperfect progressive is almost identical to the present progressive Formula: (-ar) ando Estar (conjugated in imperfect) Present Participle (-ing) + (-er/ir) iendo (Yo) estaba (Nosotros) estábamos (Tú) estabas (Él/ella/Ud.) estaba (Ellos/ellas/Uds.) estaban

III. Imperfect Progressive: Irregular forms For the imperfect progressive, irregular forms get a stem change. (ei) decir-diciendo pedir-pidiendo repetir-repitiendo seguir-siguiendo servir-sirviendo mentir -mintiendo vestir-vistiendo ou dormir-durmiendo morir - muriendo iy creer-creyendo leer-leyendo oír-oyendo caerse-cayendo destruir-destruyendo traer-trayendo ir-yendo

IV. Adding the D.O.P. to the Imperfect Progressive. When adding the D.O.P. to the I.P., you have two choices: 1. Before the verb estar. Ejemplo: Ella estaba comiendo la pizza. D.O. Ella la estaba comiendo. D.O.P. 2. Attached to the present particple (“the –ing”). Note: When attaching the D.O.P. to the “-ing”, you must add an accent. Ella estaba comiéndola. 3 2 1 

V. Adding the (D.O.P.) to the reflexive in the Imperfect Progressive. 1. The D.O.P. is placed before the verb estar or 2. Attached to the present participle (-ing) and attached reflexive. Ejemplo 1: Yo me estaba peinando el pelo. D.O. 1. Yo me lo estaba peinando. 2. Yo estaba peinándomelo. 4- 3 - 2- 1  Note: Add an accent at the 4th syllable from right to left. Ejemplo 2: Ella se estaba cortando el dedo. 1. Ella se lo estaba cortando. 2. Ella estaba cortándoselo 4- 3- 2- 1 

VI. Following the imperfect progressive with the preterite. The preterite tells a specific occurrence in the past or interrupts the action ( the imperfect progressive). Example: I was cooking when I cut myself. Yo estaba cocinando cuando me corté. He was dancing when he fell. Él estaba bailando cuando se cayó. She was playing soccer when she broke her ankle. Ella estaba jugando fútbol cuando se rompió el tobillo.
