El imperfecto Español 2: Capítulo 6

Using the imperfect… The imperfect is used to talk about the past, but it has a different meaning than the preterite. The imperfect is used to: Tell what someone used to do (or an ongoing / habitual action in the past) Describe what things were like Talk about how things used to be De niña, jugaba con muñecas. When I was little I played with dolls. De niña, tenía pelo rubio y mis muñecas eran Polly Pockets. When I was little I had blonde hair and my dolls were Polly Pockets. Aquel entonces, los Polly Pockets eran más pequeños que ahora. Back then, Polly Pockets were smaller than they are now.

…versus using the preterite In contrast, we also use the preterite to talk about the past in situations like: An action that has finished, happened once, and / or has a known duration and beginning and end Describing emotions in the past Ayer jugué con muñecas con mi prima menor. Yesterday I played with dolls with my younger cousin. Me sentí emocionada cuando recibí Polly Pockets en mi cumpleaños. I was excited when I got Polly Pockets on my birthday.

Conjugation of the imperfect To form the imperfect, remove the –AR, -ER, or –IR of the infinitive and add the following endings: Note that the “yo” and “él/ella/usted forms have the same conjugations. Context makes it clear who the subject is. -AR -aba -ábamos -abas -abais -aban -ER / -IR -ía -íamos -ías -íais -ían

Useful imperfect phrases The imperfect forms of soler with an infinitive to say someone usually did something or tended to do something We have used hay, the present tense of haber, to say what there is or there are. We can use the imperfect form, había to say that there generally was / were or what there used to be in the past. De niña, solía columpiarme durante el recreo. When I was a girl, I would usually swing at recess. Soler = “to usually do” Había diez columpios en el patio de recreo. There were ten swings on the playground.

Useful imperfect phrases The imperfect is often used with expressions such as: Muchas veces (many times) A veces (sometimes) Siempre / casi siempre (always / almost always) Nunca / casi nunca (never / almost never) Todos / cada (every)
