The “basement boys” or “sole verbs” Any IR verb that has a stem change in the present tense will have a stem change in the preterite. In the preterite only the Usted and Ustedes forms take the stem change (the ones in the basement). So, verbs that used to be shoes become slippers or flip flops. They are the other basement boys.
