5 How do you know when to stem change?
You had to memorize a list of stem change verbs: Querer (e-ie) Empezar (e-ie) Jugar (u-ue) Pedir (e-i,i) Encontrar (o-ue) Etc…

6 Stem changing in the preterite is EASY!!!! Follow these simple rules:
You stem change only “-IR” verbs. You only stem change the 3rd person forms. The verb will only change from “E-I” or “O-U”. You conjugate the other forms like normal. í imos iste isteis ió ieron

7 CHECK LIST: Is it an “-IR” verb? Is it a stem changer?
Is it in the 3rd person?
