Relative Pronouns Que and Quien Complex sentences are frequently formed in Spanish by combining two simple sentences with relative pronouns que and quien Ex. David compró la computadora. La computadora estaba en la tienda.

English that, which, and who are generally expressed in Spanish by Que Hay muchos problemas que la tecnologia ayuda a resolver. (that) La memoria de una computadora, que funciona más o menos como la nuestra, es probablemente su aspecto más importante. (which) Todos los arquitectos que colaboraron en el diseño recibieron un premio. (who)

Quien, which can refer only to people, may be used after a comma and must be used after a preposition Los programadores, que (quienes) trabajaron todo el fin de semana, por fin pudieron resolver el problema (who) ¡Ese es el actor de quien hablábamos.

Que and Cual forms: Referring to people and things more formally The simple relative pronouns que and quien are preferred in speaking in most parts of the Hispanic world. But after a preposition or a comma, English that, which, and who can also be expressed by compound forms, which are used in writing and more formal situations by many native speakers.

“Long Forms” or “Compound Relatives” Can refer to both people and things. Through the definite article they show gender and number agreement with the noun to which they refer. Like relative pronouns quien(es), the long forms can occur only after a preposition or a comma (in a nonrestrictive clause). When there is no preposition or comma, only que can be used. In many cases, que and cual variants of the long forms are interchangeable. Using one or the other is a matter of personal preference.
