3 Questions and Question Words a.k.a Interrogatives = interrogativos Spanish has 3 types of questions 1.Tag questions 2.Sí or no questions 3.Information questions

4 TAG questions Asks the listener to agree or disagree with what the speaker is saying They are formed by adding ¿no? or ¿verdad? to the end of the statement When the satement is negative, only ¿verdad? may be used Ex. Eres de Ecuador, ¿no? Este libro es muy interesante, ¿verdad? Marco no es fuerte, ¿verdad?

5 YES/NO QUESTIONS = Sí O NO These are questions which can be answered with either sí or no Usually begin with a verb The subjectif expressedoften comes at the end of the sentence Ex. ¿Está bien (Usted)? ¿Te gusta la clase de arte? ¿Haces la tarea los fines de semana?

6 Asking sí or no Questions For simple questions that can be answered by sí or no, you can indicate with your voice that youre asking a question:

8 Information Questions These are questions which request information These begin with a question wordnotice all question words have accents (see next slide for the Q words)

10 Asking Questions In Spanish, when you ask a question with an interrogative word you put the verb before the subject. QW VerbSubject

11 Asking Info Questions ¿Qué come Elena en el restaurante? ¿Adónde van Uds. después de las clases? ¿Por qué va Ignacio a la playa todos los días?

12 Using the Question Words Quién and Cuál have 2 forms: singular (Quién and Cuál) Plural (Quiénes and Cuáles) Ex: ¿Quién es tu profesora favorita? ¿Quiénes son esas chicas? ¿Cuál es tu clase favorita? ¿Cuáles son tus clases favoritas?

13 When to use cuánto/a versus cuántos/as When cuánto modifies a noun, it must agree in gender and number with that noun 4 forms: cuánto/cuánta & cuántos/cuántas Ex: ¿Cuánto helado quieres? ¿Cuánta tarea tienes? ¿Cuántos estudiantes hay? ¿Cuántas horas practicas deportes? **When it doesnt modify a noun it has only 1 form: Ex: ¿Cuánto es? ¿Cuánto cuesta?

14 ¿Qué? versus ¿Cuál? Both ¿Qué? & ¿Cuál? Correspond to the English word what They are not interchangeable! –¿Qué? asks for a definition or an explanation ¿Qué es un mariachi? ¿Qué haces ahora? –¿Cuál? asks for a selection ¿Cuál es la capital de Venezuela? ¿Cuál chico es tu primo? **Remember--¿Cómo? By itself is uses to indicate disbelief or to get the speaker to repeat what was said
