There is a fairly large group of verbs in Spanish that undergo changes in their stem when conjugated in the present tense. These verbs are often called boot verbs There are 4 types or classes of boot verbs. The stem- change occurs in all the forms except for the nosotros and vosotros form.

Remember, there are three types of infinitives: -ar, -er, -ir. Verbs in the infinitive are made up of two parts: the ending and the stem. In the following examples, the stem is underlined and the ending is in bold. hablar comer vivir The stem is what is left after you drop the –ar, -er, -ir ending hablar The change occurs in the stem Remember there are 4 types of stem- changing verbs!

You already know a couple of stem- changing verbs: Tener and venir The verbs tener and venir are what might be called partial stem-changing verbs; the yo forms do not have the stem change, but they do have an irregularity. tengo tienes tiene tenemos tenéis tienen vengo vienes viene venimos venís vienen WE NEVER CHANGE!

Thinking and planning Pensar de means to think of (to have an opinion about.) ¿Qué piensas de las novelas de Márquez? What do you think of Márquezs novels? Pensar que means to think that (in answer to the above question, for example.) Yo pienso que sus novelas son maravillosas. I think that his novels are wonderful.
