What do you remember about the present progressive in Spanish? What verb is used? How is it all formatted? Are there any irregulars we need to watch out for? Anything else?

Estar ~ A for Action In Spanish, there are 2 ways to express what you are doing right now, the “I am running” type sentence in English Regular present tense: Yo corro (ahora). Present Progressive: Estoy corriendo. The more commonly used would be the regular present tense. Present Progressive is for emphasizing that the action is happening right now.

Format of Present Progressive Estar + Present Participle

Formation of present participles:

Regular –AR verbs Regular –AR verbs Examples: -AR + “ando” Cantar Cantando Viajar Viajando Charlar Charlando

Regular –ER/-IR verbs Regular –ER/-IR verbs Examples: -ER/IR + “iendo” Comer Comiendo Correr Corriendo Abrir Abriendo Recibir Recibiendo

Stem changing -IR verbs NOTE: Stem changing verbs that end in –AR or –ER work like REGULAR verbs when forming the present participle. Stem changing –IR verbs: Change e:i or o:u Then –IR + iendo Examples: Servir Sirviendo Dormir Durmiendo Decir Diciendo

Irregular verbs (those with orthographic changes) Orthographic change = Change in spelling so that the spelling matches the pronunciation Examples: caer: cayendo creer: creyendo huir: huyendo ir: yendo influir: influyendo oír: oyendo traer: trayendo leer: leyendo NOTE: seguir (siguiendo) DOESN’T follow this pattern but rather works like a normal e:i stem changer.

Remember: can only be used for RIGHT NOW Cheat Sheet Notes: present participle So, notes should be summarized like this here. -ando Remember: can only be used for RIGHT NOW -iendo o u e i creer: creyendo ir: yendo leer: leyendo oír: oyendo seguir: siguiendo traer: trayendo caer: cayendo huir: huyendo
