“Hace” with time expressions To talk about an event that began in the past and is still going on, use the expression: Hace + time expression + que + present tense conjugation To ask how long someone has been doing something, use the phrase: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + present tense conjugation…?

Here are some time expressions you can use with hace…que and a verb in the present tense Una hora / ____ horas Una semana / ____ semanas Un día / ____ días Un mes / ____ meses Un año / ____ años Poco tiempo Mucho tiempo An hour / (number of) hours A week / (number of) weeks A day / (number of) days A month / (number) months A year / (number of) years A little while A long time

“Pero” We use “pero” to say “but” or “however” Me gusta la música clásica, pero no me gusta el jazz I like classical music, but I don’t like jazz. Me interesan las películas de terror, pero no me interesan las películas de ciencia ficción. I am interested in scary movies, however science fiction movies do not interest me.

“Sino” We use “sino” when we want to say “but” or “rather”, as in “Not this, but that instead”. “Sino” can also mean “as well” in some phrases. No me gusta este juego sino el otro. I don’t like this game, but the other one instead. No sólo coso, sino también hago algunos de mis vestidos. Not only do I sew, but I make some of my own dresses as well.

“Sino” No sólo …, sino también… As seen in the previous slide, a common expression used with “sino” is: No sólo …, sino también… Hector no sólo estudia español, sino también francés. Hector not only studies Spanish, but French as well.
