1. Los niños están cantando.

2. El chico está tocando la guitarra.

3. Las chicas y yo estamos estudiando.

4. Estamos comiendo.

5. Tara está viviendo en esta casa.

The girls and I are studying. Estamos comiendo. We are eating. Tara está viviendo en esta casa. Tara is living in this house.

What did you notice? How is Estar used? What is it matched to? What do you need to do to the different verbs to make it a present participle? (present participle = “-ing” word) AR verbs: ER verbs: IR verbs: What is the basic format then for a present progressive sentence? What do you need to do?

Present Progressive: In Spanish you can express what is happening right now in 2 ways: I am running. Regular present tense: Yo corro. Present Progressive: Yo estoy corriendo. Spanish speakers would use the regular present tense much more than the Present Progressive. Present progressive is only used for what is happening RIGHT NOW – tends to be used more as emphasis.

Basic format: 2 main parts: Estar (matched to subject) + Present Participle (-ing word)

ESTAR Estoy Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están

Present Participles: -AR verbs: Take of the –ar ending Add –ando Example: hablar – ar = habl Habl + ando = hablando
