1 The Present Continuous
This tense describes what is happening at the time of speaking or writing. It is similar to the English –ing form (the gerund). Examples in English would be: I am washing up I am watching the TV I am listening to the radio

4 The Key Ingredients To make the present continuous in Spanish you need 2 key ingredients: Auxiliary verb (estar) Present Participle (hablando / comiendo / viviendo)

5 Step 1: Choose the appropriate form of the verb estar.
ENGLISH SPANISH 1ST SINGULAR I am Estoy 2ND You are Estás 3RD He/She is You (formal) are Está PLURAL We are Estamos Estáis They are Están

6 + IENDO Stem + ANDO -AR -ER -IR Estoy Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están
Step 2: Create the present participle (the –ing form of the verb in English), by adding the appropriate ending to the stem. The great thing is that to talk about other people, it is only the form of estar that changes. Estar -AR -ER -IR Estoy Stem + ANDO + IENDO Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están

ENGLISH SPANISH I am Estoy You are Estás He/She is You (formal) are Está We are Estamos Estáis They are Están -AR -ER -IR -ando -iendo Estoy cantando = I am singing Estamos comiendo = We are eating Están escribiendo = They are writing *Stem = The infinitive (the one you find when you look in a dictionary) minus the last 2 letters. .
