The present tense is used for… When? The present tense is used for… Current actions and situations (things That are happening now) Eg: I am sitting in the classroom Habitual actions (things you normally do) Eg: I go to the shops every day Facts Eg: Spanish is difficult The earth is round

To form the present tense in Spanish you follow these steps… How? Find the infinitive of the verb being done eg: to study – estudiar Take off the 2-letter ending (-ar / -er / -ir) so that you’re left with the “stem” of the verb eg: estudiar Add one of the following endings, depending on who or what is doing the verb, and what type of verb it is X NOTE: You do not need a separate word for “I / you / he”etc, as this is shown through the verb ending you add on. -AR Verbs -o -as -a -amos -áis -an -ER Verbs -o -es -e -emos -éis -en -IR Verbs -o -es -e -imos -ís -en I You (sing, inf) He/she/it We You(pl,inf) They

Now have a go at putting the following verbs into the correct form of the present tense. Show how you work it out. X Ejemplo: We jump (saltar) SALTAR Salt- + amos = saltamos X I speak (hablar) We live (vivir) He eats (comer) You (sing, inf) leave (dejar) They practice (practicar) Hablar Vivir Comer Dejar Practicar Habl- Viv- Com- Dej- Practic- + o = hablo + imos = vivimos + e = come + as = dejas + an = practican X X X X

Fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verb choosing from the 3 choices on the right – CHECK the verb endings with who is doing the verb!! (the infinitive has been given at the start of each one) 1. vivir -- to live: Juan en México. 2. cenar -- to have dinner: Amanda a las siete. 3. desear -- to desire/want: Emilio y Ana una bicicleta. 4. trabajar -- to work: (we) en una tienda. 5. comprender -- to understand: (You sing, inf) mucho. EXTENSION: 6. llenar -- to fill: La señorita Pinto el vaso de agua. 7. cubrir -- to cover: El hombre la bicicleta. 8. enseñar -- to teach: (You sing, inf) inglés. 9. cantar -- to sing: Las profesoras del amor. 10. llevar -- to take: (You sing, inf) a los niños al centro. VIVE 1. vivimos 2. vivo 3. vive CENA 1. cienan 2. cena 3. cenar DESEAN 1. deseamos 2. desee 3. desean TRABAJAMOS 1. trabajo 2. trabajéis 3. trabajamos COMPRENDES 1.comprendes 2.comprendéis 3.comprenda If you found that really easy have a go at working these 5 out for yourself… LLENA CUBRE ENSEÑAS CANTAN LLEVAS

What are the three steps to making a verb in the present tense? Find the infinitive of the verb 2.Take off the 2-letter ending 3.Add the correct ending from the table depending on who is doing the verb

Use ONLY your verb ending table to help you if you need to What would the following be in Spanish? -AR Verbs -o -as -a -amos -áis -an -ER Verbs -o -es -e -emos -éis -en -IR Verbs -o -es -e -imos -ís -en I You (sing, inf) He/she/it We You(pl,inf) They Use ONLY your verb ending table to help you if you need to COMER she eats – HABLAR We speak – SALIR You (sing) go out – come hablamos EMPACAR they pack – sales VIVIR You (pl) live – ESCRIBIR I write – empacan vivís REACCIONAR I react – JUGAR You (pl) play – escribo reacciono jugáis
