Olivia visited the museums. 3. They cleaned the kitchen. 4. We sent the letters. 5. You and Maria returned the books. 6. Hayden washed the dishes.

Why do we use DOPs? Consider the following. John has books. I have books, too. John puts the books in his bag. He carries the bag on his shoulder. I put my books in my bag, too. I carry my bag to school. In my bag I have a sandwich. I eat my sandwich. I like my sandwich. I chew my sandwich. I swallow my sandwich. WE USE DOPs SO WE DON’T HAVE TO REPEAT THINGS A ZILLION BILLION TRILLION QUADRILLION TIMES. 

Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) A direct object receives the action of a verb and serves to answer the question What? or Whom? in relation to that verb When diagramming sentences, put the direct object in a target. I hit the ball. Do you have the books? We know you very well.

Diagram the ET For each sentence in the PRACTICA, Underline the verb. Put the direct object in a target.

Diagrammed Sentences 1. (Yo) llené el tanque. 2. Olivia visitó los museos. 3. (Ellos) limpiaron la cocina. 4. (Nosotros) echamos las cartas. 5. Tú y Ruth devolvieron los libros. 6. Lucía lavó los platos.

Now that we can recognize the Direct Object… How do we do DOPS in Spanish? Based on the number and person (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), we can substitute a DOP. me nos te x lo / la los / las

Choose the appropriate DOP for each sentence from the Entrada 1. lo 2. los 3. la 4. las 5. los 6. los

Where do you put the DOPs? Depends on…. The number of verbs in the sentence The tense of the verb. With a partner, determine how many verbs are in each sample sentence.

Placing DOPs with just one verb Put the DOP before the conjugated verb. Yo llené el tanque. DOP = lo Yo lo llené. (I filled it.)

Try #2 Olivia los visitó. Did you do it correctly?

VAMOS A CANTAR! When my friend Juan has a ________ Sing “Juan (lo/la) tiene.” When my friend Juan has more than one Sing “Juan (los/las) tiene.”

DOP Placement with more than one verb Put the DOP before the first verb Attach the DOP to the end of the infinitive Attach the DOP to the progressive -ando / iendo

Sentence #3 Ellos quieren arreglar la sala. DOP = la Place before the verb Ellos la quieren arreglar. Attach to the infinitive Ellos quieren arreglarla.

You try Sentence #4 Nosotros lo pensamos celebrar. Nosotros pensamos celebrarlo.

Sentence #5 Tú y Ruth están decorando el patio. DOP = lo Place before the verb Tú y Ruth lo están decorando. Attach to the progressive Tú y Ruth están decorandolo.

You Try # 6 Lucía los está lavando. Lucía está lavandolos.

The Kicker! When you add DOPs to the ends of progressives, you change the # of syllables, but you don’t actually change the spoken stress on the word. So what?

The Kicker! You have to put an accent on the … a of ando e of iendo #5 – Tú y Ruth están decorándolo. #6 – Lucía está lavándolos.
