2 Essential Questions: What do direct object pronouns communicate to the listener? What do direct object pronouns imply? Where do direct object pronouns go in a sentence?

3 Direct Objects The object that directly receives the action of the is the direct object. It answers the question what in regard to what the subject is doing. For example: – Marta buys the cookie. – Pablo reads the book. What receives the action of being bought? What receives the action of being read?

4 Direct Objects as people Ask yourself…did the person receive the action of the verb? For example: – Alejandra hit Mario. What received the action of being hit?

5 Direct Object Pronouns Pronouns replace words. The direct object pronouns replaces the direct object in a sentence which means that the direct object is removed from the sentence.

6 Replacing the direct object! Often we replace the direct object. For example: Pablo bought flowers. Pablo bought them. But how do you replace them in Spanish…AND WITH WHAT?

7 How do we use DOP’s? + + *lo is used for a masculine word you replace *la is used for a feminine word you replace The direct object pronoun goes immediately before the conjugated verb. subject verbdirect object pronoun menos teos lo/lalos/las

8 Examples Yo tengo la pluma. Yo la tengo. Ask yourself : 1.What is the direct object? 2.Is the direct object masculine or feminine? 3.How many objects are there? 4.Which pronoun reflects the object? 5.Replace and rewrite the sentence.

11 Two verb rule If you have a sentence with 2 verbs you have 2 options of where the DOP can go. 1. Before the conjugated verb. 2. Attached to the unconjugated verb.

12 Two verb example Yo quiero comer el helado. 1.Yo lo quiero comer. 2.Yo quiero comerlo. Masculine/Feminine? Singular or plural? lo

13 Examples Ella compra los boletos. Ella los compra. Marta y Romeo miran la película. Marta y Romeo la miran. Los estudiantes reciclan las hojas de papel. Los estudiantes las reciclan.
