We conjugate verbs differently in the preterite to indicate that the action was completed in the past. A preterite verb can be translated to –ed in English.

“Key” words that indicate the preterite: Ayer- yesterday Anteayer- the day before yesterday Anoche- last night El año pasado- last year El mes pasado- last month La semana pasada- last week El otro día- the other day

To conjugate a regular AR verb in the preterite: 1. Remove the AR to form the stem. 2. Add the appropriate ending to match the subject. Yo -éNosotros -amos Tú -asteVosotros -asteis Él, ella, Usted -óEllos, Ellas, Ustedes -aron
