Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) Español 1 Capítulo 5

What is a Direct Object Pronoun? A Direct Object is the person or thing in a sentence that receives the action of the verb directly and answers the questions WHAT or WHOM of the verb.

What are DOPs? Subject DOP Pronoun Yo ME Tú TE El/ella/ud LO, LA Nosotros NOS Ellos/ellas/uds LOS, LAS

Why do we use them? Sometimes a DOP is used instead of a noun. Meaning, it REPLACES the noun that answers the question WHAT or WHOM of the verb. I close the door. What do I close? The door (this is the DO—now replace it with a Pronoun.)   He opens the book. What does he open? The book (this is the DO—replace it w/ a pronoun.)

How do you know which DOP to replace? 1—decide whether the noun is masculine or feminine.   2—decide whether the noun is singular or plural. 3—look at your chart to determine which one. (Often you will be using the el/ella/ud or the ellos/ellas/uds)

Where does the DOP go in the sentence? 1—it goes in front of the conjugated verb, but after the subject of the sentence. Ex. He opens the book. He opens it. ------------El lo abre.

What if the sentence is negative? 1---if the sentence is negative, the DOP goes after the subject and the words NO or NUNCA, but still before the verb! Ex. I don’t see the book. I don’t see it --------------No lo veo. Ex. He never watches tv. He never watches it. -------El nunca la mira.

TENER vs. VENIR

¿Qué tienen que hacer? Tener + que + verb * obligation formula * Somebody “has to do something” Yo tengo que estudiar para el examen. Nosotros tenemos que limpiar la cocina. (see other act. In file)
