Comparativos de igualdad (Comparisons of equality)

Equality Fred is as tall as Frank. When we say that two people (or places, or objects, etc.) are the same, we use as… as in English.

Equality Paco es tan alto como Marta. Marta es tan alta como Paco. tan adjective/adverb como Note that the adjective changes to agree with the first person (Paco/alto, Marta/alta) that we talk about.

¡Practicamos! Paco es rico. José es rico también. Paco es ___ ____ ___ José. Paco es tan rico como José.

Beti es guapa. Juana es guapa también. Beti es ___ ____ ____ Juana. Beti es tan guapa como Juana. ¡Muy bien!

El gato es grande. La gata es grande. El oso es grande El gato es grande. La gata es grande. El oso es grande. Los gatos son ___ ___ ___ el oso. Los gatos son tan grandes como el oso. Did you remember to make grandes plural to agree with the plural subject (Los gatos)?

To make a negative statement: I’m not as tall as my brother. Yo no soy tan alto como mi hermano. (“no” before the verb)

More expressions of equality We can also say that someone has/does, etc. as many… as and as much…as someone else.

¿Por qué? Both sentences have a noun between as… as: “I don’t have as many classes as my brother” “I don’t do as much homework as my classmates.” How do we do this in Spanish? No tengo tantas clases como mi hermano. No hago tanta tarea como mis compañeros.

We use a form of the word tanto (tanto, tanta, tantos, tantas) that agrees with the noun. No tengo tantas clases como mi hermano. “Las clases” > tantas No hago tanta tarea como mis compañeros. “la tarea” > tanta

¡Practicamos más! Yo tengo 3 amigas. Mi hermano tiene 3 amigas. Yo tengo _____ ____ ____ mi hermano. Yo tengo tantas amigas como mi hermano.

Orlando trabaja 10 horas cada día. Gabriela trabaja 10 horas también. Orlando trabaja ____ ____ ____ Gabriela. Orlando trabaja tantas horas como Gabriela.

2 Tipos de comparativos de igualdad tan+ adjetivo/adverbio+ (agrees with subject) como tanto/a/os/as+ (agrees with noun that follows) sustantivo(noun)+ como

Inequality Fred is taller than Frank. When we say that two people (or places, or objects, etc.) are the unequal. Fred es más alto que Frank.

Inequality Paco es menos alto que Marta. Paco is less tall than Marta. Marta es más alta que Paco. Marta is taller than Paco Yo tengo más tarea que Pablo. Pablo tiene menos tarea que yo. más/menos adjective/adverb/noun que

Los irregulares mejor = better peor = worse mayor = older menor = younger Carlos es menor que su hermano. Carlos is younger than his brother. Las papas son mejores que las verduras. The potatoes are better than the vegetables.
