INGLÉS BÁSICA PRIMARIA ASSESSMENT IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?  Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences. ((Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses: shifting the focus from teaching to learning by Huba and Freed 2000)

WHAT IS EVALUATION?  Evaluation refers to the decision making which follows assessment.  Evaluation is a judgment regarding the quality, value, or worth of a response, product, or performance based on established criteria and curriculum standards.

TESTING  Tests are instruments that allow both teachers and students to know how the learning process is taking place.  These instruments also allow to find out strenghts and weaknesses that can be improved.

WHAT TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN DESIGNING TESTS?  Why are students being assessed?

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT DIAGNOSTIC ASSESMENT It may occur at the beginning of a term or a unit of study, or whenever information about the prior learning of a student is useful. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT It is similar to diagnostic assessment but differs in that it provides ongoing feedback to the teacher about the effectiveness of instruction. when SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT when It occurs most often at the end of a unit of study. The primary purposes are to determine the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that have developed over a period of time, to summarize student progress.

DIAGNOSTIC: Tests, journals, performance-based assessment, FORMATIVE: Interviews, journals, oral presentations, portfolios, anecdotal records, conferences SUMMATIVE: Tests,Checklists, Rating Scales, and Rubrics
