INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS Chapter 4A

1) WHAT IS AN INDIRECT OBJECT?  It tells to/for whom the action occurs in the sentence.

EXAMPLE: DIRECT OBJECT OR INDIRECT OBJECT?  My parents gave my sister a teddy bear.  DO: What did they give? A teddy bear  IO: To whom? To my sister

2) IOP (INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN) As with direct objects, we can also use PRONOUNS to replace INDIRECT OBJECTS.

EX: MY PARENTS GAVE MY SISTER A TEDDY BEAR.  Instead of saying MY SISTER, we can say HER. IOP= HER  My parents gave HER a teddy bear.

3) IOP IN SPANISH me (to/for me)nos (to/for us) te (to/for you)os (to/for y’all) le (to/for him, her, you) les (to/for them, you all (formal)

4) WHERE DOES THE PRONOUN GO?  Same rules we learned for other pronouns  1 conjugated verb – BEFORE verb  2 verbs (conjugated+infinitive)  BEFORE 1 st verb OR ATTACHED to end of infinitive

EXAMPLE – 1 VERB My parents bought my sister a teddy bear. My parents bought her a teddy bear. Mis padres le compraron un oso de peluche. le = for her

EXAMPLE – 2 VERBS My grandparents want to give my brother and me many toys. My grandparents want to give us many toys. Mis abuelos quieren darnos muchos juguetes. OR Mis abuelos nos quieren dar muchos juguetes.

5) ADDING CLARIFICATION OR EMPHASIS Read the following sentence: Yo le di un tren eléctrico. le = ??? To whom did I give an electric train? *Sometime you need to add clarification for “le” or “les”.

5) ADDING CLARIFICATION OR EMPHASIS a mí (to/for me)a nosotros/as (to/for us) a ti (to/for you)a vosotros/as (to/for y’all) a él, ella, Ud., Juan, etc. (to/for him, her, you, Juan) a ellos/as, Uds., Marta y Pedro, etc. *Hint: We used these phrases last year when you learned about “gustar”

EXAMPLE:  Yo le di un tren eléctrico.  le = ???  Add a clarification phrase!  Yo le di un tren eléctrico a Paco.
