The subjunctive is used to express doubts to express purpose or wishes when there is a change of subject. AQA Spanish AS Level © Nelson Thornes 2008

AQA Spanish AS Level © Nelson Thornes 2008

The subjunctive is required to express wishes/purpose when another person i.e. a second grammatical subject is involved. But it is not needed if both clauses are about the same person – you can just use the infinitive for the second verb. So… Llevo a mi amiga al Corte Inglés para que busque algo para la fiesta. (subject changes from yo to ella) But… Hago mis compras en los grandes almacenes para buscar los últimos modelos. (subject is yo in both clauses) AQA Spanish AS Level © Nelson Thornes 2008

Remember: The present subjunctive is based on the stem of the normal first person (yo) form of the present tense. (To this you add the ‘wrong’ endings, with ‘e’ for ‘-ar’ verbs and ‘a’ for ‘-er’ and ‘-ir’ verbs.) That means that stem-changing verbs, spelling change verbs and irregular forms need care, e.g. tener: tenga, tengas, tenga, tengamos, tengáis, tengan venir: venga, vengas, venga, vengamos, vengáis, vengan hacer: haga, hagas, haga, hagamos, hagáis, hagan poder: pueda, puedas, pueda, podamos, podáis, puedan cerrar: cierre, cierres, cierre, cerremos, cerréis, cierren ser: sea, seas, sea, seamos, seáis, sean estar: esté, estés, esté, estemos, estéis, estén AQA Spanish AS Level © Nelson Thornes 2008
