When talking to one person, use the usted form: Lea el libro. Read the book. Abra la puerta. Open the door. Siga el modelo. Follow the model. No hable en clase. Dont talk in class.

When talking to more than one person, use the ustedes form: Limpien sus cuartos. Clean your rooms. Hagan la tarea. Do the homework. Esperen Uds.* Please wait. No lleguen tarde. Dont arrive late. Note: Adding Ud. or Uds. adds a polite tone much as the word please does in English.
