Los adjetivos

Los adjetivos en español In Spanish, adjectives are: masculine or feminine, and singular or plural; they usually follow the nouns they modify. Por ejemplo: Era un tigre feroz. Los payasos del circo eran divertidos.

Los adjetivos en español Exceptions to this rule include demonstrative adjectives (este, ese, aquel), adjectives of quantity (mucho, poco), cardinal numbers (dos, tres), question-asking words (¿qué?) and indefinite adjectives (otro). They precede the nouns they modify. Por ejemplo: ¿Conoces a ese hombre? Vimos pocos gorilas. Había seis elefantes en el circo. ¿Qué payaso preferías? El otro payaso es guatemalteco.

Los adjetivos en español Adjectives that describe a permanent characteristic often precede the noun they describe. Por ejemplo: La blanca nieve caía.The white snow was falling.

Los adjetivos en español Ordinal numbers usually precede a noun, although they may sometimes be used after a noun, especially in headings and for titles. Note: Cardinal numbers precede ordinal numbers when both are used in one sentence to refer to the same noun. Por ejemplo: Éste es el tercer circo del año. This is the third circus of the year. Eran los dos primeros hombres en la fila. They were the first two men in the line.

Los adjetivos en español Several common adjectives may be used before or after the nouns they describe. Note: Before a masculine singular noun, bueno changes to buen and malo changes to mal. Por ejemplo: Era un buen circo. It was a good circus. Era un circo bueno. It was a good circus. Ella no era una mala acróbata. She was not a bad acrobat. Ella no era una acróbata mala. She was not a bad acrobat.

Los adjetivos en español Some adjectives actually change their meaning according to whether they are used before or after a noun. For example, placed before a noun, grande may be the equivalent of great. (Before singular nouns, grande changes to gran.) Placed after a noun, a form of grande conveys that someone or something is big. Por ejemplo: Es un gran circo. It is a great circus. Es un circo grande. It is a big circus.

Here are other adjectives that change their meaning depending upon their placement before or after a noun: Un amigo viejo An old (elderly) friend Un viejo amigo An old (I have known him a long time) friend La chica pobre The poor (without much money) girl La pobre chica The poor (pitiful) girl El mismo payaso The same clown El payaso mismo The clown himself Un coche nuevo A (never- owned) car Un nuevo coche A new car (that is new to me, but that may have been previously owned)

Los adjetivos en español If two or more adjectives describe a noun, they may be used as follows: place both (or all) before the noun, connecting the last twi with the word y; or place one before one and one (or more) after the noun, according to the preceding rules. (The shorter more subjective adjective usually precedes the noun.) Por ejemplo: Era el primer circo grande y bueno del año. It was the first good, big circus of the year.
