Mandatos Commands

Who are you talking to?  When we do commands, we don’t conjugate a verb in a 6-box chart. Because you can’t give a yo form command, for example. We will review:  Tú commands  Usted commands  Ustedes commands  Nosotros commands

Do it or don’t do it?  As we learn each type of command, we’ll have affirmative and negative versions of each command.  This doesn’t mean you’re giving good or bad advice.  It means you’re telling someone TO DO it or NOT TO DO it.

Affirmative Tú Commands  These are the commands that are not like the others.  You use the ÉL/ELLA/USTED form of the verb in the PRESENT TENSE.  Sing! ¡Canta!  Eat!¡Come!  Share!¡Comparte!

Affirmative Tú Commands  There are 8 irregular affirmative tú commands, and they are short!  PonPonerPut!  VenVenirCome!  SalSalirLeave!  VeIrGo!  TenTenerHave!  HazHacerDo! / Make!  SéSerBe!  DiDecirSay!

Polite Requests

Idea Grande  As you worked through examples of commands, did you notice that they sometimes felt abrupt or rude? In Spanish, as in other languages, there are other ways to phrase requests that are more indirect and can be more polite.

Opciones  One of the ways to do that in Spanish is to conjugate the verb PODER in the conditional tense. Yo podríaNosotros/as podríamos Tú podríasVosotros/as podríais Él Ella podría Usted Ellos Ellas podrían Ustedes

Traducción  Using these verbs is like the word COULD in English.

Práctica  Mamá, ¿podría yo comprar una camisa nueva?  Camarero, ¿podría usted traer un vaso nuevo para mí?  Estudiantes, ¿podrían pasar los papeles al frente, por favor?  Amigo, ¿podrías venir a mi casa después de las clases hoy?
