The preterite is a tense used to express an action completed at a definite time in the past. This tense is usually referred to as the past tense in English. In English, regular verbs in the past tense end in –ed.

To form the preterite of a regular verb, add the appropriate preterite ending to the verb’s stem.

Notice that the yo and usted/el/ella forms have an accent over the final vowel

The nosotros/as form is the same in the preterite as in the present tense. Use the context to determine the tense of the verb.

Now cut your paper on each side into 5 tabs. This means you make 4 cuts on each side. The next part is where the 2 different colored writing utensils come into play. One side will be one color and the other will be the other color. One side is the –ar and the other is the –er/-ir

Now on each tab write out the subject pronouns. Yo _______________ Tu _______________ El/Ella/Usted _______________ Nosotros/as _______________ Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes

Ar verbs é aste Ó amos aron

- er and – ir verbs í iste ió imos ieron

Now in the middle conjugate Nadar-to swim but in the past tense means… Vender-to sell but in the past tense means…. Escribir-to write but in the past tense means…
