Apple ID and iPads SUHSD is using technology to connect students to digital learning, rich content, and smart applications A Parent Guide to creating a student (under 13) Apple ID FOR DISTRIBUTION TO PARENTS OF STUDENTS UNDER 13

What you need to know Apple is subject to Child Online Privacy Protection Act regulations (COPPA) which means they will not permit children under 13 to have an Apple ID without parent permission. Apple collects parent permission through a parent account. Once an Apple ID is created by you (we will give you the account ID and password for SUHSD), you will get an message at the e- mail address you provide asking you to confirm the account. SUHSD students must have active Apple ID in order to download the applications we have purchased for them to use at school.

What you need to know SUHSD students can use the Apple ID to access Apple’s store. Parents are not required to enter credit card or financial information. SUHSD maintains restrictions on all iPads so that the Apple store is not accessible to students unless we are delivering applications to iPads. SUHSD encourages parents to look at their child’s District issued iPad on a regular basis to ensure it is being used properly and safely. When your child turns 13, Apple converts the Apple ID to a 13+ user account. SUHSD controls the accounts on District issued iPads with restrictions as stated above but your child could use his/her District Apple ID to access Apple’s Store on home computers or other devices.

What you need to know Students who are 13+ are allowed, by law, to create Apple IDs and other Internet accounts (such as Facebook) without parental permission or approval. SUHSD restricts access to websites that are not deemed educationally appropriate for student use. This restricted access applies the same policies to iPads whether students are at home or at school. Public wi-fi access points (such as Starbucks) are set up in a way that allows students to bypass our filtering policies so it is recommended that students not be permitted to use public wi-fi access points without parent/adult supervision.

What you need to do SUHSD will create an Apple ID using your child’s district provided g-mail address such as or (if you are not sure what your child’s e- mail username is, you can go to the District’s home page, click on Parent verification, and type in your child’s Student ID. His/her name will appear with his/her address. YOU MUST USE your child’s DISTRICT address, not personal address to create the Apple ID.

What you need to do You must verify your address with the District by going to the District website home page. The steps for completing this process can be accessed by clicking here.here

What you need to do Check your personal (not your child’s). You will see a message from Apple regarding your child’s Apple ID. Read the box in red (right). Then click on the online consent form link

What you need to do You can also click on the parent guide link which will take you to Apple’s parent guide for Apple ID.

What you need to do When you click on the link to the online consent form, you will be redirected to this page.

What you need to do The temporary password you need is located at the top of your e- mail from Apple.

What you need to do The password is case sensitive and includes numbers and symbols so make sure you copy it correctly. The password below is different than the one Apple will send you.

What you need to do Your child’s First and Last name should pre-fill on the form. Confirm that your child’s date of Birth is correct. If it is not correct, then change it. The Apple ID will be your child’s District g-mail address i.e. (you CANNOT change this) Apple has specific password requirements. To make it easy and uniform – your child’s password should be: Abmm-dd-yy or Ab

What you need to do Next – choose 3 security questions. These should be questions you know the answers to but not your child. You do not want your child to be able to use this Apple ID to purchase Apps from the App Store without your consent. If you prefer a language other than English – you can select a different preferred language here.

What you need to do Next – you will need to verify your contact information including a daytime phone number. This is required by law since your child is under 13 years old. Put a check mark in the box that says I agree to the iOS, iCloud….Privacy Policy.

What you need to do Finally – you must scroll down to the bottom of the Consent form window. When you get to the bottom, you will be able to check the box next to: I have read and agree to….Disclosure and Consent. Click on the Create Apple ID button

What you need to do You will see this message when you press the create Apple ID button on the previous screen. YOU MUST check your (not your child’s) where you will be asked to confirm that you are the one who created the ID.

What you need to do You are almost finished. You will see a message from Apple in your inbox. Click on Verify Now in the body of the message from Apple

What you need to do You will be taken back to Apple’s website to verify your address. Enter your child’s Apple ID (school address) and the password you created. Then click Verify Address.

What you need to do When you get to this screen, you will have completed all of the steps and your child’s Apple ID is verified. If your child is under 13 years of age, HE/SHE CANNOT PICK UP HIS/HER iPAD until you have completed this process.

Same instructions in Spanish

Make sure the student name matches your child. Make sure the primary contact information is correct. Make sure the address is correct. If Correct – choose Yes. If Not Correct choose No.

Make sure the student name matches your child. Make sure the primary contact information is correct. Make sure the address is correct. If Correct – choose Yes. If Not Correct choose No. This screen will allow you to correct an address if the one displayed is wrong. This screen will not allow you to change your child’s name or primary contact information if it’s incorrect. If the student name or primary contact information is NOT Correct, please stop this process and contact your child’s school office and talk to the Registrar. Your child’s registration information needs to be updated to show the correct student name and primary contact. This is not the correct address

If you see that the address in incorrect (no longer valid or incorrectly recorded) and you select No, this is not the correct e- mail address, you will see the question: Do you have an address? If you verify that the address we have on file is correct, you will see a message like this: Once you click Save, please check your for a link to instructions that will enable you to: 1.Verify an SUHSD Apple ID for your child if he/she is under 13 years of age and in grade 7, 8 or 9. Apple allows students who are 13 or older to verify SUHSD iTunes accounts for themselves. 2.Receive your parent observer account information from Canvas Learning Management System (like Jupiter Grades) 3.Create an parent account for Jupiter Grades The Apple ID is a key component of the iPad program because it’s the way we deliver Applications students need for school to their District issued iPad.

If you choose Yes, I do have an address – you will be asked to enter the correct address. You must do this twice. This helps assure that the address you provide doesn’t have mistakes or errors. When you have entered your address and verified that it is correct, press Save. NOTE: SUHSD is preparing your child for the 21 st century which means we need you to come along. We will provide as much technology support as you need to get you up and running. Once you are up and running, you will always know what is happening with your child! Even if that knowledge gives you a headache from time to time, it’s better than not knowing what’s happening.

If you choose No, I do not have an address – you will be asked to create an account for yourself. The rest of this tutorial will show you how to create an account that you can use just to keep in touch with what’s happening with your child at school. There are several free “webmail” account services but we recommend you use Google Mail. We recommend this for the following reasons: 1.Your child as a District provided g-mail account. You can link your g-mail account to your child’s. This gives you another level of access to what they are doing at school. 2.Google gives all g-mail users free storage space for files, documents, and pictures in the cloud (Google Drive). Google also gives all g-mail users access to apps (Google Docs) that work like Microsoft Office. 3.We (Information and Educational Technology) are familiar with Google’s products so we can offer support if/when you need it. 4.Google Drive works with nearly every kind of smart phone and tablet so you can have mobile access as well as computer access. 5.You must have an address (you might as well use Google) to create an iTunes account for your child. You must also have to get notifications from Canvas and Jupiter Grades about your child’s progress in school.

Create a free g-mail account

For the visual learners – you can watch the tutorial on YouTube For those of you who like to follow steps that are written down, use this link. When you have created a g-mail account – go to Slide 2 and follow the instructions.Slide 2
