Imperfect Progressive and Preterite

Imperfect of estar + present participle It’s very easy to form. Estábamos hablando Estabas escribiendo
Use the imperfect progressive to tell what was happening when something else happened. Ex: Bob was talking on the phone when the ambulance arrived. Bob estaba hablando por teléfono cuando la ambulancía llegó.
But why can’t I just use the imperfect tense? 1. Cause I said so. 2. Variety in speaking. 3. That’s stupid. (refer to #1)

Remember the irregular participles: decir - dormir - pedir - repetir -creer - seguir -leer - servir -traer - vestir - diciendo pidiendo repitiendo siguiendo sirviendo vistiendo durmiendo creyendo leyendo trayendo
