Let’s review what you already know about Spanish verbs…. All verbs end in either –ar, -er, or –ir. Verbs in their simplest form are called “infinitives”. When you change a verb to match a subject, it’s called “conjugation”. There are basically two types of verbs, “regular” and “irregular”.

Irregular verbs…. Irregular verbs are “irregular” because they do not follow a pattern, their forms are mostly all different and you have to just memorize them. Some examples of “irregular” verbs that you’ve already learned are: SER: soy, eres, es, somos, sois and son ESTAR: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, and están TENER: tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, and tienen. IR: voy, vas, va, vamos, and van.

Regular verbs…. Regular verbs are “regular” because they do follow a pattern. You learn that all you have to do is match up the correct ending with a specific subject and you have a verb. Usually the only thing that you have to really memorize are the endings themselves. The “regular” verb form that you’ve already learned is the “-ar” verb ending.

Ex: hablar=to talk hablohablamos hablashabláis hablahablan

-ar verb endings You should remember that all you have to do with “regular” –ar verbs (-o, -as, -a, - amos, áis, and –an) is memorize the endings and then follow the steps: 1. drop the –ar verb ending  escuch 2. choose the subject that you want to talk about.  “ella” 3. add the appropriate –ar verb ending to match the subject.  Ella escucha.

-er and –ir verbs…. Let’s now take a look at –er and –ir verb endings that are “regular” in the present tense. These verbs, like the regular –ar verbs, have very specific endings. Once you learn them, you’ll be able to conjugate any “regular” Spanish verb in the present tense!
