For the teachers…. This is the lesson slides for a consecutive pair of lessons I did linked to exclamations in Spanish. There’s a few exercises and a Blockbusters game in the 1 st part (slides 2-9) and the rest is an ICT suite lesson where I gave my students the chance to write subtitles for a short animation. I set up the lesson by finding a short movie (1-2 mins) and using the print screen button to capture different parts of the movie from youtube. I pasted these onto slides like a storyboard and underneath gave spaces for the children to write what they want the octopuses to say. The advantage of it being a silent film is that the students can get them to say whatever they want and can be really creative and funny. The focus was on using recyclable vocab like commands and exclamations to make the dialogue and after marking the work I chose 3 to show to the rest of the class. I downloaded the movie using a youtube grabber and used movie maker’s caption button to write the subtitles my best 3 students had written.

All students will learn how to use exclamations in Spanish Qué clase más aburrida How stupid! How handsome! What an incredible guitar! What an evil idea! What lovely aliens! Qué tonto! guapo! guitarra más increíble malvadamalvadoidea simpáticosimpáticos extraterrestres Malvado Use the text below to translate the sentences into Spanish. Remember to put slides 3 and 5 into slide show view to avoid giving away answers.

Exclamations Mmm really Zoya ! How interesting! Hi Atheeqa, I’m a Kangaroo, How cool! In English exclamations sound like this ‘How cool’ / ‘How stupid’ In Spanish we use Qué + an adjective (Qué raro! = How weird) (Qué tonto! = How stupid) There are also some good ones with nouns Qué desastre! – What a disaster! Qué pena – What a shame Qué lástima – What a pity Qué idiota – What a dimwit! Qué casualidad – What a coincidence Qué suerte – How lucky!

Exclamations with nouns Qué gatito más hermoso Sometimes you’ll want to give an exclamation about a noun (What a pretty cat) In this case you’ll need to use ‘Qué + Noun + Más + Adjective’ Qué sitio más interesante What an interesting place! Qué chicas más aburridas What boring girls! Qué casa más lujosa What a luxurious house

Escribid una frase para cada foto Ejemplo: Qué chocante!

Escribid una frase para cada foto Ejemplo: Qué piratas más feos!

Giving instructions We can also use these two phrases: Debes / Hay que + A verb -Debes comer menos chocolate – You must eat less chocolate -Hay que ir al gimnasio – You have to go to the gym -No hay que fumar – You mustn’t smoke If the words that follow your instruction phrase don’t end in –er/-ar/-ir then they are not verbs.

Storyboard On the following slides you’ll see stills from the movie, these are where you can enter your dialogue. There is space for each character to say something – Remember Be imaginative!!! If you want a still from the movie I didn’t include, you can pause the movie and press the print screen button (above insert) This will take a picture of the bit you want.
