11 Present tense – JUGAR (to play) & TENER (to have) JuegoJugamos JuegasJugáis JuegaJuegan TengoTenemos TienesTenéis TieneTienen Jugar is an irregular stem-changing verb. (In a stem-changing verb, there is a change to the front of the verb in the Yo, Tú, Ud., and Uds. forms. The Nosotros and Vosotros forms conjugate as normal verbs would. Ex. Yo juego al tenis todos los días. Tener (to have) – tener is also an irregular stem-changing verb with an irregular yo form too. Tener is used to show ownership or possession. It is also used to talk about age, hunger, thirst, etc. (ex. Yo tengo 15 años). Tener + que + infinitive means “to have to” (ex. Ella tiene que hacer su tarea). PRACTICE: To practice JUGAR, write 6 sentences about people you know who plays a sport and the sport they play. Do they play it well, poorly, often, never, every day, sometimes, etc.? To practice TENER, write 6 sentences about what you and others have to do afterschool and this summer (use tener que). Also write sentences stating how old you and all of your immediate family members are. (remember age is expressed with the verb tener > yo tengo 15 años.) If you have questions or are uncertain, please check pg. 208 (JUGAR verb), pg. 228 (TENER verb) in your book or ask me.

12 Possessive adjectives Mi(s) MyNuestro / Nuestra / Nuestros / Nuestras Our Tu(s) Your (informal)Vuestro / Vuestra / Vuestros / Vuestras Y’all’s (in Spain) Su(s) His / Her / Your (formal) Su(s) Their/ Your (you guys’) Possessive adjectives show possession like my hat, your car, his uncle, their sandwich. In Spanish, possessive adjectives agree in number and gender (for nosotros and vosotros) with the object that is possessed (NOT the POSSESSOR). Ex. Mis tías, tus libros, su carro (or el carro de ella), nuestras abuelas, tu madre, sus lápices. PRACTICE: Write 10 sentences using the dice. Label one die the 6 pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, etc.), label the second die with singular and plural, masculine and feminine objects on each side (ex. Pizza, galletas, libro, estudiantes, etc.). 13 GUSTAR / ENCANTAR (A mí) megusta / encantacorrer. (A ti) tegusta / encantael pescado. (A él) (A ella) le (A Ud.) gusta / encantamantener la salud. (A mí) megustan / encantanlos deportes. (A ti) tegustan / encantanlos pasteles. (A él) (A ella) le (A Ud.) gustan / encantanlas papas fritas. Me gusta jugar al tenis means “I like to play tennis.” Me encantan las fresas means “I love strawberries.” But if we translate the sentence literally into English it would be “Tennis is pleasing to me” and “Strawberries enchant me.” Verbs like gustar and encantar always use me, te, or le for I, You and She/He/You (formal). Use me / te / le gusta or me / te / le encanta for a singular noun and me / te / le gustan or me / te / le encantan for a plural noun. When you use me gusta(n) or me encanta(n) to talk about a noun, include el, la, los, or las. Ex. A él, le encanta el basquetbol. A ella, le gustan los deportes. Note that basquetbol and deportes are the subjects of the examples and that they are preceded by el and los. (“To him, basketball is enchanting. To her, sports are pleasing”). PRACTICE: Do Actividad 18 on page 135 in your book and actividad 7 on pg. 227 in your book. 14 Writing practice You already know that the writing prompt will ask you to describe yourself. Translate the following into Spanish for practice (see the back of this page to check your work): My name is Bob. My friends call themselves Ann and Joe. I’m from Helena. I’m 15 years old. I’m tall, funny and not very patient. Ann is intelligent but sometimes she isn’t nice. Joe is nice but lazy. I like to ride my bike in the mountains and play my guitar. I don’t like to go to school. I have two sisters and a cat. My older sister Sammy is 17 and my younger sister Becky is 12. Sammy likes to go fishing and Becky likes to go shopping. My favorite class at school is biology. I also study art, gym and Spanish. For breakfast, generally, I eat cereal and drink coffee. For lunch, I eat a sandwich and drink a pop. For dinner, my mom prepares fish or steak with vegetables. After school, I like to go to my friend’s house. We play videogames every day. On the weekend, sometimes I go to the movies or I have a soccer game. I’m going to go to Missoula this weekend to go shopping. I would like to go shopping more, but I can’t. I don’t have money. I want a job this summer at Dairy Queen because I need money and I like their hamburgers..
