As a pilot study for a more extensive survey (which may be part of any of the above reasons) 5. When we’re surveying for Language Programmes: We want to assess language programme needs, or the tasks needed to fulfull a language programme, ie what needs are there for a translation or literacy programmes. We have limited resources, and we want to assess the size of the task so that we can allocate resources wisely. To determine this we assess : 1. The vitality of the language - will it continue for the life of a translation/ literacy project 2. The language and dialect boundaries - what languages need translations/ literacy programmes 3. The language use and attitudes - will there be language shift or spread - how does this impact the expected vitality of the language 4. The level of bilingualism - can they understand the scriptures in the LWC. Is there need for a literacy project, or for bridging materials. 5. Literacy levels - is a literacy project needed, or a scripture in use programme needed L15 Survey Intro.ppt

Language and Society 2001 24 May 2001 Encuestas para programas lingüísticos Evaluar el progreso de un proyecto, por ejemplo : Prueba de comprensión de una traducción Prueba de una ortografía Reevaluación de límites entre lengua y dialecto We can also use survey to assess progress of a language project, eg : 1. test comprehension of a translation while the translation is still in progress - You can check existing translations or translations in progress for their ease of understanding or weeding out misunderstandings or may be rejected elsewhere. 2. test an orthography 3. re-assess language and dialect boundaries In actuality - testing any of these will invariably give some indication of all of these issues - but the focus will remain on one to ensure good results - but it might highlight that an additional survey is needed in one of the other areas not yet tested L15 Survey Intro.ppt
