1 Juan 6:24 - 35 24 En aquel tiempo, cuando la gente vio que en aquella parte del lago no estaban Jesús ni sus discípulos, se embarcaron y fueron a Cafarnaúm para buscar a Jesús. 25 Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla del lago, le preguntaron: “Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?” 26 Jesús les contestó: “Yo les aseguro que ustedes no me andan buscando por haber visto signos, sino por haber comido de aquellos panes hasta saciarse.

2 27 No trabajen por ese alimento que se acaba, sino por el alimento que dura para la vida eterna y que les dará el Hijo del hombre; porque a éste, el Padre Dios lo ha marcado con su sello”. 28 Ellos le dijeron: “¿Qué necesitamos para llevar a cabo las obras de Dios?” 29 Respondió Jesús: “La obra de Dios consiste en que crean en aquel a quien él ha enviado”. 30 Entonces la gente le preguntó a Jesús: “¿Qué signo vas a realizar tú, para que lo veamos y podamos creerte? ¿Cuáles son tus obras?

3 31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, como está escrito: ‘Les dio a comer pan del cielo’ ”. 32 Jesús les respondió: “Yo les aseguro: No fue Moisés quien les dio pan del cielo; es mi Padre quien les da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que baja del cielo y da la vida al mundo”. 34 Entonces le dijeron: “Señor, danos siempre de ese pan”.

4 35 Jesús les contestó: “Yo soy el pan de la vida. El que viene a mí no tendrá hambre y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed”. Palabra del Señor

6 John 6:24 - 35 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.

7 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?

8 31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

11 Reflections on John 6:24 - 35 Reflexiones en Juan 6:24 - 35 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Aug. 5, 2012 This is the 18 th Sunday of Ordinary Time. At first glance one might think that the people were pretty desperate to find Jesus. When they could not find him in one place they chase him down at another place. But Jesus knew better. He could read their hearts. He knew the real reason for chasing him down. They wanted more free groceries, to fill up their stomachs.

12 Este es el decimoctavo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. Al primer instante, quizás uno piense al leer este evangelio que la gente estaba algo desesperada para encontrar a Jesús. Cuando no lo pudieron encontrar en un lugar se van correteando al otro lado buscándolo. Pero Jesús, que lee los corazones, sabia exactamente porque lo andaban buscando. Solo querían llenar sus estómagos una vez más.

13 Remember this was the same crowd that a little while back wanted to make him King, but Jesus knew better and went off alone into the mountains. Capernaum was stubborn and disobedient. Jesus worked the miracle of the loaves because he wanted to soften up their disobedience (Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John, 43-2). What he did should have been enough to soften the hardest of hearts. Instead, their hearts are calloused. They look only, for the food for the body.

14 Hay que recordar que esta era la misma gente que hace un poco querían hacerlo rey. Como Jesús conocía sus intenciones, salió a solas a la montaña a rezar. Capernaum era desobediente y testaruda. Jesús hizo el milagro de los panes porque quería ablandar sus corazones desobedientes (Crisóstomo, Homilías Acerca del Evangelio de Juan, 43-2). Lo que ya había hecho deberia de haber sido suficiente para ablandar hasta los duros de corazón. Sin embargo, sus corazones estaban más duros. Solo buscaban el pan del cuerpo.

15 Jesus knows that we need some things in this world. In Matthew 6:31-33 He says: “Do not worry about what you are to eat, or what you are to wear.” Your heavenly Father knows what you need already. “But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

16 Jesús sabe que necesitamos ciertas cosas en este mundo. Sin embargo en Mateo 6:31-33 nos dice “No se preocupen de lo que han de comer, ni de lo que han de vestir.” Su Padre celestial ya sabe lo que necesitan. “Buscar primero el reino de Dios y su justicia, y todo lo demás se les concederá por añadidura.”

17 We cite Chrysostom: “I fed your bodies, he says, so that after this you might seek that other food which endures, which nourishes the soul. There is nothing worse, nothing more shameful, than gluttony, which clouds the judgment and reduces the soul to satisfying appetites only. In this case, nothing can be more unreasonable than their asking for another miracle, as if none had been given already.”

18 Citamos a Crisóstomo: “Yo doy de comer a sus cuerpos, Él dice, para que después de esto busquen la otra comida que perdura, que alimenta al alma. No hay nada peor, nada más vergonzoso, que la gula, que anubla el juicio y reduce al alma solo a satisfacer los apetitos. En este caso, nada puede ser más irrazonable que el de ellos pedir por otro milagro, como que si ya no les hubiera hecho uno.”

19 What they say about Moses is a form of put down. They do not mention the miracle of Jesus as either the work of Moses or the work of God; rather they avoid raising Jesus to equality with God, or lowering him by comparing him to Moses. They take the middle ground: only saying: “Our fathers ate manna in the desert.”

20 Lo que dicen de Moisés es una forma de desprecio. No menciónan el milagro de Jesús, ni lo comparan a la obra de Moisés o como obra de Dios. Al contrario, ellos evitan levantar a Jesús a igualdad con Dios, y ni lo comparan con Moisés. En vez de esto, toman el lugar en medio: solo dicen: “Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto.”

21 From this we learn how dishonest envy is. It never gives credit when credit is due. No matter how good Jesus was they never gave him credit. Later on we know they would deliver him out of envy (Mark 15:10), in spite of all the signs he worked in their midst.

22 De esto vemos que deshonesto es la envidia. Nunca le dan crédito a alguien cuando se lo merezce. No le hace que tan bueno era Jesús, nunca lo reconocieron. Después nos damos cuenta que lo entregaron por razón de envidia (Marcos 15:10), sin importarles los muchos milagros que él habia realizado en medio de ellos.

23 The Father is the one who sent me, Jesus said. It is upon the Son of Man, that he has set his seal. He is the one who provides our daily bread. And he adds: “I am the bread come down from heaven, he who keeps coming to me will not hunger, and he who keeps believing in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).

24 El Padre es el que me ha enviado, Jesús dijo. Es sobre el Hijo del Hombre, que ha puesto su sello. Él es el que proveyó nuestro pan de cada día. Y añade: “Yo soy el pan bajado del cielo. Aquel que sigue viniendo a mi no tendrá hambre, y aquel que sigue creyendo en mi nunca tendrá sed” (Juan 6:35).

25 How beautiful it is when the people of God said: “Lord, give us this bread always.” Note that Augustine (Tractates on the Gospel of John 25,13) says: “Like the Samaritan woman, to whom it was said: ‘Whoever drinks of this water shall never thirst,’ thought he meant natural water and said, ‘Sir, give me this water’ thinking she would never be in want again; in the same way these people say: ‘O Lord, give us this bread’ that refreshes and sustains us and yet never fails.”

26 Bello es cuando la gente de Dios dice: “Señor, danos siempre de este pan.” Pero notamos que Agustín (Tractazos Sobre el Evangelio de Juan 25, 13) dice: “Como la mujer Samaritana, a quien se le dijo: ‘Quien tome de esta agua nunca mas tendrá sed,’ pensó que él hablaba de agua natural y dijo: ‘Señor, dame de esta agua’ pensando que ella jamás estaría en necesidad otra vez; en el mismo modo esta gente dice: ‘Señor, danos este pan’ que nos refresca y nos sostiene y que nunca falla.”

27 In short, this is the case of those who came to Jesus with imperfect intentions. They not only came to Jesus because He was so good; rather they came to Jesus because they wanted more of the good things he gave them. A perfect intention would have been to come to Jesus because they had a perfect love for him. Jesus tries to lift up our hearts always, from good to better, and from better to excellent, right?

28 En efecto, este es el caso de aquellos que han venido a Jesús con lo que llamamos intención imperfecta. No solo vienen a ver a Jesús porque Él es bueno; mas bien vienen a Jesús porque quieren mas de lo que les dio... Una intención perfecta hubiera sido venir a Jesús solo por el amor perfecto de Él en sí mismo. Jesús sin embargo siempre trata de levantar sus corazones de lo bueno a lo mejor, y de lo mejor a lo excelente, ¿verdad?
