1 There are PAST forms of the subjunctive called the IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTVIE

2 When will we use the IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE? We will use the Imperfect Subjunctive with the same rules we have already learned (UWEIRDOCAT) We will need the Imperfect Subjunctive when the context of the sentence is in the past or conditional tense.

3 Por Ejemplo: 1.Yo quiero que ella vaya a la graduación. 1. Yo quería que ella fuera a la graduación. 2. Dudo que tú lleves la toga. 2. Dudé que tú llevaras la toga.

4 How to form the Imperfect Subjunctive: 1. Go to the ellos/uds. form of the PRETERITE. 2. Remove the -ron ending. 3. Add new ending: -ra-ramos -ras-rais -ra -ran

5 Comprar: 1. Compraron 2. Compra__ 3. Compraracompráramos Comprarascomprarais Comprara compraran

6 -ar, -er, -ir verbs all take the same endings!!! Vivir:vivieraviviéramos vivierasvivierais viviera vivieran Comer:comieracomiéramos comierascomierais comiera comieran

7 No irregulars!!! All Spanish verbs follow the rules for making Imperfect Subjunctive! So there are no irregular verbs in this tense! However…

8 Be careful to remember that many verbs have irregular preterite forms, and we need to know those forms to make the Imperfect Subjunctive. Estar:estuvieraestuviéramos estuvierasestuvierais estuviera estuvieran

9 Algunos Ejemplos: 1. Mamá insistió en que tuviéramos un video cámara para la ceremonia. 2. Salieron temprano para que fueran los primeros de llegar. 3. Era importante que ella viera a su hermana en el desfile de graduandos.

10 The verb DECIR In the Imperfect Subjunctive, the verb Decir will often be used to relate a past tense command - we will use Imperfect Subjunctive.

11 Ella dijo que hiciéramos un pastel para la fiesta. Yo les dije que fueran a comprar las decoraciones. Ellos dijeron que llegáramos temprano.

12 Contrary to Fact Statements When we want to express an if / then statement that is contrary to fact we will use the Imperfect Subjunctive for the if statement and the Conditional for the then statement.

13 Si tú fueras buen atleta, estarías en los juegos olímpicos. Ella viajaría mucho si tuviera más dinero. Si estuviéramos en Atlanta, te visitaríamos.
