2 El concepto del subjuntivo
El subjuntivo es un modo (a mood) Hay tres modos en el español: El indicativo (present, past tenses) El subjuntivo (makes a doubt or opinion about another’s action, etc.) El imperativo (commands: tells someone to do something)

3 El imperfecto del subjuntivo
Cuando el contexto de la frase se trata del pasado, hay que usar el imperfecto del subjuntivo. En el tiempo pasado, se utiliza el mismo criterio para decidir si hace falta el indicativo o el subjuntivo, presente o pasado.

4 El imperfecto del subjuntivo
Verb in the main clause in the past tenses. Has a subjunctive causing expression or a reason to use the subjunctive in the second clause. Ej: Mi papá quería que yo sacara una A en esta clase. Imperfect subjunctive imperfect

5 Indicativo/subjuntivo/imperfecto del subjuntivo
Yo quiero hacer la tarea. (indicativo) Yo quiero que tú hagas la tarea. (presente del subjuntivo) Yo quería que tú hicieras la tarea.(imperfecto del subjuntivo) I want to do the homework. I want you to do the homework. I wanted you to do the homework.

6 Ejemplo: present vs. imperfect subjuntive
Es necesario que ella vaya a la escuela. (presente del subjuntivo) Era necesario que ella fuera a la escuela (imperfecto del subjuntivo) It's necessary for her to go to school. It was necessary for her to go to school.

7 Ejemplo: present vs. imperfect subjuntive
Yo quiero hacer la tarea antes de salir. (indicativo) Yo quiero hacer la tarea antes de que mi madre llegue.(presente del subjuntivo) Yo quería hacer la tarea antes de que mi madre llegara. (imperfecto del subjuntivo) want to do the homework before going out. I want to do the homework before my mother arrives. I wanted to do the homework before my mother arrived.

8 How to form the verb for imperfect subjunctive:
Para formar el imperfecto del subjuntivo, hay que tomar la tercera persona plural del pretérito y cambiar la terminación -on por -a, -as, -a, -amos, -ais, -an. NO IMPORTA el tipo de verbo (-ar, -er, -ir.). Claro, es importante dominar la tercera persona del plural del pretérito.

11 Terminaciones/Endings: for all verbs –ar,-er,-ir
Yo- a Nosotros, Nosotras-amos Tú -as Él, Ella, Usted-a Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes-an

12 Recuerda: Cuando es necesario usar el subjuntivo
UWEIRDO (If the first clause expresses: Uncertainty/Unexpected, Wish, Emotion, Impersonal Expression, Requests/Recommendations, Doubts/Disbeliefs, Ojalá) 2 clauses with a different subject

No creía que él tuviera que comer 32 sandías en el concurso de comer. No pensé que él tuviera que comer 32 sandías en el concurso de comer. pretérito Imperfecto del subjuntivo

14 Ejemplos: Want/wish Mi madre no quería que yo fuera un fracaso.
Mis abuelos no desearon que sus nietos fueran fracasos. My mom didn’t want me to be a failure. My grandparents didn’t want their grandchildren to be failures.

15 Ejemplos: Emotion Me alegraba de que tú hubieras logrado tu meta.
It makes me happy that you had achieved your goal. Tenía miedo / Temía que tú no pudieras lograr tu meta antes de graduarte. I was afraid that you weren’t able to achieve your goal before graduating.

16 Ejemplos: Impersonal Expression
Era malo que él no se convirtiera en astronauta. It was bad that he didn’t become an astronaut Era lástima que no siguiera los requisitos necesarios. It’s a shame that he didn’t follow the necessary requirements,

17 Ejemplos: Requests/Recommendation
El oso le aconsejó al salmón que entrara en su boca. The bear advised the salmon to enter his mouth. Yo te recomendaba que no fueras tan ambicioso. I recommended to you that you not be so ambitious.

18 Ejemplos: Doubt Mis amigos dudaron que yo pudiera subir esta montaña.
Era imposible que Pedro llegara a la cima de la montaña.

19 Ejemplo: Ojalá Ojalá que fuera tan fácil.

20 Recuerda: Cuando es necesario usar el subjuntivo
PMSEnCA (Siempre subjuntivo:) Para que: so that; in order that A menos que: unless Sin que: without En caso de que: in case that Con tal de que: provided that Antes de que: before that

21 Para que: so that; in order that
Cuando Roberto trató de golpearme en la cara, tuve que bajarme la cabeza justo en el momento para que no me lastimara. Not all pain is gain !

22 None of us is as dumb as all of us.
A menos que: unless No quería reunirme con ustedes, a menos que Alejandra viniera a la reunión. None of us is as dumb as all of us.

23 Sin que: without Ganadores vs. Perdadores Daniel no iba a participar en el concurso sin que hubiera una posibilidad de ganar. Because nothing says "you're a loser" more than owning a motivational poster about being a winner.

24 En caso de que: in case that
Yo iba a practicar a bailar más en caso de que el lograra su meta de ser el campeón bailador. The tallest blade of grass is the first to be cut by the lawnmower.

25 Con tal de que: provided that

26 Recuerda: If clauses present vs. past
Si (If) Clauses PAST: Si yo fuera rica, yo compraría una casa en Marin. PRESENT: Si vienes a mi casa, lo pasarás bien. Formulas: IF + imperfect subjunctive + conditional IF + present tense + future tense
