4 Here are some words that are clear indicators of the past preterit. Ayer ~ Hoy es jueves, ayer miércoles. Anoche ~ El opuesto de esta noche. Esta Mañana ~ Esta mañana, comí huevos para el desayuno. Esta Tarde ~ Tuve un juego de futbol esta tarde. La Semana Pasada ~ Antes de esta semana El Mes (año) Pasado ~ Antes de este mes/año Hace … que ~ Hace tres años que hablé con Luis Ayer por la mañana/tarde ~ Ayer por la tarde, tomé una siesta.

7 Ahora vamos a repasar nuestros ejemplos… I entered the room. What are the words that you need in order to translate this sentence? Yo entrar El cuarto Lets look at the verb entrar a little closer.

8 The verb Entrar means: to Enter You already know how to conjugate regular ~ar verbs in Spanish in the present tense. Lets conjugate ENTRAR in the present tense. Yo entro Tú entras élentra Nosotrosentramos ellosentran

9 Now we need to take the preterite endings that we just learned and reconjugate ENTRAR in the preterite tense. What are the ~ar preterite endings? Yo é Tú aste éló Nosotrosamos ellosaron

10 Now we can add these endings to the stem of the verb entrar. Yo entré Tú entraste élentró Nosotrosentramos ellosentraron

11 So back to our example… I entered the room. You will need the I or Yo form of the verb entrar In the preterite tense for this sentence. Yo entré en el cuarto.

12 Lets move to the next example… He bought a book. ÉlComprarUn libro The preterite tense ending for comprar is ó. Add that to the stemcompr and you get… Compró Él compró un libro.
