3 You already know You already know how to conjugate verbs in the present tense of –AR, – ER, and –IR verbs. Subject -AR -ER -IR Yo Tú Él, Ella, Ud. Nosotros Ellos, Ellas, Uds

4 Preterite of regular –ar verbs
The preterite of regular –ar verbs is formed by dropping the infinitive ending –ar and adding the appropriate ending to the stem.

5 Regular –ar verbs in the preterite
SUBJECT ENDING Yo -é Tú -aste Él, Ella, Ud. -ó Nosotros -amos Ellos, Ellas, Uds -aron

7 Car, Gar, Zar Only in the yo form, there is a spelling change.

11 Pronombres The direct object is the word in the sentence that receives the action of the verb. The quaterback throws the football to the reciever. What is recieving the action?

12 Pronombres The direct object pronoun replaces the noun.
The pronoun must agree with the noun its replacing. They can replace either a person or a thing.

13 Pronombres English example
The quaterback throws the football to the reciever. The quaterback throws it to the reciever.

14 Pronombres Ejemplo 1: Ella compró el bañador. Ella lo compró.
Note the direct object pronoun comes right before the verb.

15 Pronombres Ejemplo 2: No miré las fotografías. No las miré

16 Pronombres Para Practicar: Ella compró el regalo. Ella lo compró

The verbs ir and ser are irregular in the preterite tense.

Fue Nosotros Fuimos Vosotros Fuisteis Ellos, ellas, Uds. Fueron

21 Ir y ser en el pretérito Since they have identical forms, the context in which each verb is used in the sentence will clarify the meaning. Example: El Señor Martínez fue profesor de español. Él fue a España.
