Why has Java been so successful? 1. Open and extensible -- makes perfect vehicle for compatibility between devices Write once, run anywhere capability scales Java from the data center to the mobile phone 2. Compatibility comes from strong community support. Community drives and steers Java 3. Java is becoming ubiquitous both in volume and distribution. Java is in everything from cell phones to parking meters. 4. All of this ensures that Java continues to create value for customers, developers, users and companies like Sun. Interesting Factoids: 1. Gillette - Testing tag technology through its supply chain by placing RFID tags in select products for the US market. If successful, up to half a billion tags could be placed on Gillette products over the next few years. 2. Goodyear -- wants to combine RFID tags with tire-pressure sensors to create "smart tires," that can communicate to a vehicle's electronic command modules to warn pending safety issues. 3. Visa, MasterCard and American Express brand cards deployed that contain Java Card technology. The technology license for these cards runs through various smart card suppliers who develop, manufacture and deliver the cards. Recently launched Visa Wave card in Asia: no signature is required and there is no need to hand the card to the cashier simply wave, pay and go. Visa Wave allows consumers a fast and convenient way to make payment within seconds. The world's first Visa Wave cards are issued by MBF Cards in Malaysia. 4. Getty Museum: With GettyGuide, the one million annual visitors to L.A.'s J. Paul Getty Museum will be able to access information on art objects and galleries via kiosks using standard Web browsers or via a location-based wireless handheld device.

This is why Java is truly everywhere: Cars: For example, Siemens VDO has created a state-of-the-art “infotainment” for BMW 5 and 6 Series. Siemens VDO infotainment solution integrates high-end systems for navigation, audio, TV, phone, and rear seat entertainment for the ultimate in-car communications and entertainment services. ubSub3=34 TVs: Sun estimates about 1 million Java-based settop boxes in the market today. Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles like the Boeing ScanEagle or some of the vehicles that run the DARPA challenge. Boeing and leading universities recently demonstrated autonomous navigation capabilities on an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) known as the ScanEagle. During a resent research flight demonstration, the Boeing Company used Real-Time Java technologies to enhance the performance of the ScanEagle. Lottery terminals such as the GTech lottery POS machines also use Java. Sensors: The concept of a network of Java sensors is being piloted to monitor San Francisco Bay water quality - this is a real world project between Sun, Agilent, SF State University, and Romberg Tiburon Institute (think of a network of Java enabled sensors deployed in the Bay to monitor water quality, including temperature, etc.). Medical devices: Java is a key enabler for GE Healthcare, for the innovation behind a variety of commercially available products, including Unity Network IS Patient Viewer, which provides a near-real-time remote view of physiological data such as ECG, Blood Pressure, and Temperatue. While making rounds, sitting in meetings, or checking in from home, clinicians can use a web browser to remotely access their patient's vital data providing faster access to patient information where and when they need it. Patient Viewer was architected using Jini, Swing, and Java Web Start.Home devices: Shell Home Genie, Philips Electronics for remote home control and surveilance. Parking Payment Stations like those developed by 8D Technology in use in Montreal leverage Java SE for real time inventory of parking spots and Java ME in PDAs used by metermaids.
