2 Past Progressive What is it?
It is used when action was happening in the past. Just like present progressive has a formula, past progressive does too. Formula: estar (imperfect tense) + present participle To form the participle drop the verb ending and add -ando (ar verbs) or - iendo (er & ir verbs)

3 How to form the past progressive
Formula Estar (imperfect tense) + present participle Estar in the imperfect tense. estaba estábamos estabas estabais estaba estaban Ejemplo: She was running. To run= correr Ella estaba corriendo.

4 Spell changes occur in the participle of –ir verbs: (e-i, o-u)
Ejemplos: Decir- diciendo Vestir(se)- vistiendo-vistiéndome, etc. Dormir- durmiendo Venir- viniendo *Ir- yendo (irregular) *Poder- pudiendo (irregular) *Traer- trayendo (irregular)

5 Past progressive w/objects and reflexive pronouns:
Ejemplos: When adding direct objects, indirect objects, and reflexive pronouns, you add them to the end of the present participle and add an accent on the a of -ando and the e of -iendo or –yendo. Yo estaba vistiéndome cuando tropecé con el juguete en el suelo. Los paramédicos estaban sintiéndose triste que la persona herida se murió.

6 Practice: Past progressive w/preterite- Write the following sentences in Spanish:
The doctor was examining the x-ray when suddenly he fell. (examinar / *caerse) The ambulance was coming when it crashed into the apartment building. (venir- e-i / chocar con) The nurse was giving me stitches when I screamed. (dar / gritar) We were escaping when we twisted our ankles. (*escaparse / *torcerse)

El doctor estaba examinando la radiografía cuando de repente él se cayó. La ambulancia estaba viniendo cuando chocó con el edificio de apartamentos. La enfermera estaba dándome las puntadas cuando grité. Nosotros estábamos escapándonos cuando nos torcimos los tobillos.
