2 #1: Subject Pronouns- used to identify a person.  Here are the 11 pronouns you will need to know:

3 YoI Tú You- informal Usted (Ud.) You- formal ÉlHe EllaShe Nosotros We- boys/ boys & girls Nosotras We- girls Vosotros You guys- SPAIN ONLY Ustedes (Uds.) You guys (everywhere else) Ellos They- boys/ boys & girls Ellas They- girls

4  What is the difference between “tú” and “usted”? They both mean “YOU”. ???  “Tú” is used for someone your age (young) or someone you know well (family/ friends).  “Usted” is used for older people, to show respect. Usted

5  You will use these pronouns with verbs. We will start with the verb SER.  “Ser” means “to be”.  Use “ser” to:  Identify a person  Say where a person is from. (use with the word “de”)

6 Here’s your “ser” chart: Yo Soy- I amNosotros/Nosotras Somos- We are Tú Eres- You areVosotros Sois- You guys are (Spain only) Él/Ella/Ud. Es- He/She is & You are (formal) Ellos/Ellas/Uds. Son- They are & You guys are

7  Examples: Yo soy de Buenos Aires. – Yo soy de Buenos Aires. – I am from Buenos Aires. I am from Buenos Aires. Ellas son de Venezuela.- Ellas son de Venezuela.- They are from Venezuela. They are from Venezuela.  Translate:  You (to a friend) are from México.  (Tú) Eres de México.  We (boys and girls) are from Minnesota.  (Nosotros) somos de Minnesota.

8 #2: Gustar + verbs in the infinitive  Use the verbs “gustar” to talk about what people like to do.  To do this, use the following phrases:

9 Me gusta- I like Te gusta- You like- informal Le gusta- He/She likes You like- formal Nos gusta- We like Os gusta- You guys like- Spain Les gusta- They like You guys like

10  Then, add a verb to the phrase.  Examples:  Me gusta dibujar.- I like to draw.  Te gusta dibujar.- You like to draw.  Le gusta dibujar.- He/She likes to draw.  Nos gusta dibujar.- We like to draw.  Les gusta dibujar.- They like to draw.

11  When you want to really emphasize or identify the person that you are talking about, add “a” + the person’s name OR the following:  Example: Sonia likes to read.- A Sonia le gusta leer.  She likes to read.- A ella le gusta leer. A mí me gusta.A nosotros nos gusta. A ti te gusta.A vosotros os gusta. A usted le gusta.A ustedes les gusta. A él, ella le gusta.A ellos, ellas les gusta.
