La agenda de hoy 02/19/14 Los pronombres de sujeto
El vocabulario: la pronunciación y la recognición Conversando con el verbo ser = to be La tarea en parejas Clave de respuestas Hoy aprendieron:
2
Pronombres de sujeto In English we use different kinds of pronouns depending on how they function in a sentence: Mark gives the book to Susan (no pronouns) He gives the book to Susan (subject pronoun) Mark gives it to Susan (direct object pronoun) Mark gives the book to her (indirect object pronoun) These pronouns are not interchangeable: Mark gives it to she* (We can’t put a subject pronoun where an indirect object pronoun belongs)
3
Pronombres de sujeto The same applies to Spanish. Only a subject pronoun goes in subject position: Holly es estudiante Ella es estudiante Julie, Holly y Vivian son estudiantes de Teachers College Nosotros somos estudiantes de Teachers College Fahad, Shmuel, Tamika, Julie, Vivian and Kate son estudiantes del Español Ellos son estudiantes de Español
4
Pronombres de sujecto Redundancy occurs in English with a noun:
Vivian and Holly eat lunch. Vivian and Holly eat fruit. Vivian and Holly eat dessert. If I take out the noun(s), I do not know who we are talking about: Vivian and Holly eat lunch. Eat fruit. Eat dessert. This is because eat is the verb for I, you, we, and they In English the subject pronoun is required once the speakers establish who is being spoken about: Vivian and Holly eat lunch. They eat fruit. They eat dessert.
5
Pronombres de sujeto Redundancy occurs in Spanish with a noun and a pronoun: Vivian y Holly comen el almuerzo. Vivian y Holly comen la fruta. Vivian y Holly comen el postre. Ellas comen el amuerzo. Ellas comen la fruta. Ellas comen el postre. Notice how the ending of the verb is the same so we know we are still talking about ellas. If we were talking about another subject, for example if I change to Fahad, the verb ending would change. Therefore, in Spanish I can drop the pronoun once the subject is established by the speakers: Vivian y Holly comen el almuerzo. Comen la fruta. Comen el postre.
