1 The Preterite Tense Spanish 3, Chapter 1
The Preterite Tense is 1 of 2 past tenses in Spanish. It talks about things that happened once in the past. It is like the English "ed."

2 Regular –AR verbs Endings: Example: Hablar
Yo -é Nosotros –amos hablé hablamos Tú -aste hablaste Él Ellos habló hablaron Ella -ó Ellas -aron Ud Uds Example : Yo estudié mucho anoche.= I studied a lot last night.   Él bailó en la fiesta.= He danced at the party. Spelling issues: Verbs ending in -car, -gar and -zar have the following changes ONLY in the yo form.  -car--qu -gar--gu -zar--c Tocar—toqué Jugar--jugué Empezar-empecé

4 IRREGULAR Preterite Tense
CHANCLA VERBS There are 3 groups of Chancla Verbs: O-U, E-I, and I-Y. They experience a change only in the "chancla" or the third person singular and plural (él, ella, Ud, ellos, ellas, Uds.) Regular endings apply. 1)O-U Dormir Dormí Dormimos Dormiste Durmió Durmieron Other verbs: Morir-to die

6 3)I-Y  *-ER and -IR verbs whose stems end on a vowel have a spelling change in the 3rd person singular and plural (él, ella, Ud., ellos, ellas, Uds.). The "i" changes to a "y."
