"I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to raise his life by means of a conscious effort" - Henry David Thoreau PRINCIPLES, PARADIGMS AND PROCESSES Basic Principle: People are responsible for their own elections and have the freedom to choose. Key Paradigms: "I am responsible for my behavior and the choices I make in life" "I can expand my personal freedom and my influence by being proactive" Key Process: -Recognize reactive trends and develop proactive responses. -Increase your circle of influence. -Become a transition figure for your own benefit and for others. -Exercise human gifts through conscious choice in decision making.

1. RESPOND IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECURITIES Characteristics of a Proactive Person: -Respond according to values. -Accept responsibility. -Concentrate on the circle of influence. FREEDOM TO CHOOSE BY SECURITIES ANSWER STIMULUS ANSWER Reactive Behavior: Reactive people allow external influences (moods, feelings, or circumstances) to control their responses. Proactive Behavior: Proactive people use the margin of freedom to make decisions that best apply to their values. Their freedom to choose increases as they wisely use the space between stimulus and response. STIMULUS

2. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY When we blame or accuse others, we are reactive. We focus on the weakness of other people and we get so involved in their annoying behaviors that we lose the power to think, feel and act in our best interest. On the other hand, exercising proactivity, we do not allow the weakness of others to handle our decisions. In spite of the actions and dispositions of others, we make choices according to our values, purposes and vision. "What hurts or hurts us is not what people do to us. What hurts us is the answer that we choose for what they make us " - Stephen R. Covey

THEORIES OF DETERMINISM Reactive people blame their attitudes and behaviors on things they believe they can not control. They respond to the stimulus, often attributing their behavior to three determining factors: GENETICS Features that We inherit. SICOLOGICAL Our education, breeding. ENVIRONMENTAL What surrounds us.

THE FOUR HUMAN GIFTS Proactive People Exercise 4 Gifts: SELF-AWARENESS Examine thoughts, moods and behaviors. IMAGINATION Visualize beyond the experience and the present reality. AWARENESS Understand the good and the bad, and follow the integrity of the person. INDEPENDENT WILL Act independently of external influence.

3.CONCENTRATE IN THE CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE The circle of influence of the person includes those things that he or she can directly affect. CIRCLE OF CONCERN The Circle of Concern comprises all the things about which he or she cares. CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE "You can choose your actions, but not the consequences of these. These are governed by laws and natural principles " - Stephen R. Covey

EXPANDING YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE The circle of influence is like a muscle that develops and gets elasticity with exercise, but that is atrophied by the lack of use. As a result, your circle of influence grows. However, when people focus on things they can not control, they have less time and energy to devote to things they can influence. As a result, their circle of influence is reduced. CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE PROACTIVE APPROACH REACTIVE FOCUS
