Notice the fomula: Hace + time expression + que + verb Hace dos años que vivo en los EEUU. I have been living in the USA for 2 years.

Hace seis meses que estudiamos español. We have been studying Spanish for 6 months.

To express how long it has been since …..just add no before the verb. Hace + time expression + que +NO verb Hace dos años que no juego al fútbol. It has been 2 years since I have played soccer.

Hace seis meses que no hablamos español. It has been 6 months since we have spoken Spanish.

To ask how long an action has been going on: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hace + que + (no) verb? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (no) juegas al ajedrez? How long have you been playing chess? (has it been since you’ve played chess) Hace tres horas que (no) juego al ajedrez.

How long has he been eating? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que él come? Answer: Hace media hora que él come.

How long has it been since he has danced? ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que él no baila? Answer: Hace 3 semanas que él no baila.

To ask how long an action had been going on: ¿Cuánto tiempo + hacía + que + imperfect verb? ¿Cuánto tiempo hacía que jugabas al ajedrez? How long had you been playing chess? Answer: Hacía tres horas que jugaba al ajedrez.
