GRAMÁTICA El Imperfecto: Los Usos del Imperfecto

The preterite and imperfect are both past tense in Spanish, but we use them in different situations. The following are the situations when we would use the imperfect tense.

I MPERFECT W eather Estaba lloviendo. It was raining. Hacía calor. It was hot.

I MPERFECT A ge Cuando eran niñas eran pequeñas, pero estaban muy contentas. When they were children, they were small, but they were very happy. Cuando tenía cinco años... When I was 5 years old….

I MPERFECT T ime Era muy tarde. Eran las cinco de la tarde. It was very late. It was five o’clock in the afternoon. Era viernes, el 13 de octubre. It was Friday, October 13.

I MPERFECT E motions/feelings Él estaba aburrido. He was bored. Nos gustaba ver las películas de horror. We used to like watching horror movies.

I MPERFECT P hysical Description Ellas eran morenas y muy bonitas. They were brunette (dark-haired) and very pretty. Los jugadores eran altos y delgados. The players used to be tall and thin.

I MPERFECT L ocation Ellos estaban en la estación del tren. They were at the train station. El libro estaba en mi mochila. The book was in my backpack.

I MPERFECT H abitual actions (repeated actions) Cada verano, íbamos a la playa de vacaciones. Each summer we would go to the beach for vacation.

I MPERFECT I nterrupted actions *An ongoing imperfect action will be interrupted by a preterite action. Yo leía cuando de repente sonó el teléfono. I was reading when all of a sudden the phone rang.
