Gustar: How to say you like something

Gustar In Spanish, when we want to say that we like something, like food, objects, or an activity, we use the verb gustar.

Cosas que Recordar There are a couple of things that we have to remember when we use these verbs: 1.Plurality 2.Indirect object pronouns

Pluralidad When the noun that you are talking about is plural, you also have to make the verb plural. For example: 1.Gustar + manzana (apple) = gusta 2.Gustar + manzanas (apples) = gustan

¿Por qué? The verb gustar really means: to please –En inglés: I like the apple. –En español: The apple pleases me.

Indirect Object Pronouns You also need to remember to specify who or what it is that the noun is pleasing to. You do this by adding the correct indirect object pronoun in front of the verb: menos teX leles

For Example: I like chess. –Me gusta el ajedrez You like the animals. –Te gustan los animales. We like Chinese food. –Nos gusta la comida china. He likes sports. –Le gustan los deportes.

Más Clarificación To avoid confusion, the phrase a + (noun or pronoun) can be used in front of the indirect object pronouns to add clarification or emphasis. –Le gustan los deportes. A él le gustan los deportes. –Les gustan las películas de misterio. A mis padres les gustan las películas de misterio. –Le gusta la comida china. A Alejandra le gusta la comida china.
