When do you use gustar?
To imply likes and dislikes (the verb to like does not exist in Spanish)
It is important to note that the grammatical word order is different when using gustar.
Parts of speech: Subject: performs the action of the sentence. Verb: is the action of the sentence. Direct Object: receives the action of the verb. Indirect Object: benefits from the action received by the direct object.
The subject of a gustar sentence is always the item(s) found pleasing.
I like fruit.
The fruit is pleasing to me.
Me gusta la fruta.
Gustar only exists in third person: (We talk about the things we like not to them.) gustagustan *used for singular subjects*used for plural subjects Me gusta el arte.Me gustan los deportes. *used with infinitive subjects. Me gusta bailar. Me gusta bailar y cantar.
Negative Expressions To express that we do not like something we use the word not in English. The Spanish equivalent is no. Grammatically we must place the negative expression directly in front of the indirect object pronoun in a Spanish sentence. Me gusta el baloncesto.No me gusta el baloncesto.
