Tener Idioms 39 In Spanish there are many idioms or expressions that start with the verb tener. tener…años tener calor tener ganas de + infinitive tener suerte tener éxito tener razón tener cuidado tener hambre tener sed tener frío tener sueño tener prisa tener que + infinitive ¡Ojo! In English, many of these expressions use verbs other than “to have” in English.

tener…años - to be…years old 39 tener…años - to be…years old El niño tiene dos años. The boy is two years old.

tener calor - to be hot 39 Tenemos calor. We are hot.

tener ganas de (infinitive)- to feel like (doing something) 39 tener ganas de (infinitive)- to feel like (doing something) Tengo ganas de comer pizza. I feel like eating pizza.

tener suerte- to be lucky 39 Ganamos la lotería. Tenemos suerte. We won the lottery. We are lucky.

tener éxito- to be successful 39 Ella tiene éxito. She is successful.

tener razón- to be right 39 Tienes razón. You are right!

tener cuidado- to be careful 39 Ten cuidado. Be careful!

tener hambre- to be hungry 39 Él tiene mucha hambre. He is very hungry.

tener sed- to be thirsty 39 Ella tiene sed. She is thirsty.
